Born and raised on the coast of California, sisters and Mikoh co-founders, Oleema and Kalani Miller grew up with the ocean as their playground. Raised within a family of surfers and designers, their surf-appropriate swimwear brand, Mikoh is a culmination of the best of their upbringing.
The brand’s pieces are definitely feminine, but built to endure, whether that’s hitting the surf or the pool (over and over). We caught up with the sisters to learn about the habits that keep them inspired and living well, from green smoothies and surf trips to a heart-shaped island and their favorite edible splurge in LA…
Daily breakfast:
Kalani: I like to start off morning with turmeric, lemon and ginger tea. I make it fresh every morning. I also like to make chia pudding.
Oleema: I like four egg whites with half of an avocado with sriracha and a ridiculous amount of pepper. To drink, a green smoothie.
My food philosophy in one sentence:
Kalani: Try to eat as organic and clean as possible, but if you want that chocolate cake from time to time, go for it.
Oleema: Eat to live, not live to eat (with a side of ice cream).
Fave workout:
Kalani: I love doing Pure Barre and I am also a big fan of Pilates. I think these give the biggest transformation. But nothing beats a beach walk or fun surf session.
Oleema: Being a first-time homeowner in Hawaii, there are the most insane hiking trails behind my house, which range from one to five hours, depending on how long you’d like to hike for.
Fave place to surf:
Kalani: Nothing beats a fun Waikiki surf session, but I also love some secret waves in Tavarua.
Oleema: Definitely Tavarua Rights.
Best beach to street (or dinner) tip:
Kalani: I always get cold, so I always like to bring layers along with me. I also always a have a bikini on me, because you never know where the day may take you.
Oleema: The easiest way to transition from beach to street is definitely all about comfort and something easy. My favorite is a good pair of denim cut offs and a sweater, or an oversized maxi dress.
Fave surfing fuel:
Oleema: The green smoothie that I have in the mornings, as it’s light but has enough nutrients to get me through the day.
Kalani: My homemade ginger-blueberry kombucha.
Bikini obsessed with now:
Oleema: Bangkok Top and Hualalai Bottoms.
Kalani: I love the Capri Top and Sao Paolo Bottom. Love pairing a fuller coverage top with a skimpier bottom.
Once a week for my health I:
Kalani: Try to get a massage or acupuncture, some kind of body work.
Oleema: Have a moment to myself to reflect on the week.
Best fast food option:
Oleema: A number one from In-N-Out with extra lettuce, grilled onions and extra pickles.
Kalani: In-N-Out, because there’s nothing quite like picking this up after getting off a plane in LA.
If I could give just one piece of health advice it would be...
Oleema: Eat your greens.
Kalani: Try to do something active every single day, and make it something that you enjoy. I’ve also recently taken up Tahitian hula!
Ingredient in products I always avoid:
Oleema: Anything I can’t pronounce.
Kalani: Anything with fake dyes!
Current healthy obsession:
Oleema: Dry brushing.
Kalani: I am obsessed with my homemade kombucha. It takes three weeks for the entire process.
Crazy health idea that actually works:
Oleema: Apple cider vinegar. It works for literally everything.
Kalani: Drinking organic apple cider vinegar.
5 things always in my medicine cabinet:
Oleema: Apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil and isopropyl alcohol.
Kalani: I love Natio ageless toner (from Australia), an organic fluoride-free toothpaste, my Sonicare electric toothbrush, Wellness Formula and organic coconut oil.
Non-negotiable:
Oleema: Being outdoors!
Kalani: Try your best to be happy every single day!
Fave healthy getaway:
Oleema: The North Shore of Oahu.
Kalani: Surprisingly, there is a lot of good, healthy and organic options in Bali, where we do a lot of our production.
Best surf trip of all time:
Oleema: Tavarua.
Kalani: Every year we go to Tavarua, which is a heart-shaped island in Fiji.
My current mantra:
Oleema: Less is more.
Kalani: Try your best to be happy every single day!
My go-to juice or smoothie:
Oleema: A green smoothie, with half coconut water and half alkaline water, a few handfuls of spinach and a medley of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Topped with hemp and chia seeds.
Kalani: Flax seed, chia, frozen bananas, almond milk, Mattole Valley Naturals protein powder and some fresh, organic spinach.
