Superfood Spotlight: Rooibos

Superfood Spotlight: Rooibos

What You Should Know: Rooibos is an herb native to South Africa, notoriously enjoyed in the form of a sweet-tasting red- or green-hued tea. Actually a part of the legume family, rooibos’s high amount of antioxidants make it a popular choice when looking to get the most out of each sip. And because it is caffeine-free, it is a stellar option for those who are sensitive to the energizing substance.

Why You Should Try It: Is there anything not to love? Also known as red bush tea, rooibos’ polyphenols have proven to be anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral. Rooibos is rich in many minerals, including calcium, magnesium and fluoride which all promote optimal bone and dental health. The tea is also very low in tannins, which means it is an excellent choice to calm nerves and soothe you into a sounder sleep!

Need even more reasons to steep a cup of red bush tea? Rooibos soothes stomach cramps, and is even able to relieve the pain of infants suffering from colic. And the high level of antioxidants strengthen the immune system to fight against future illness. Cheers!

Let’s Get Together: Rooibos tea can be sipped either hot or iced. We love a cup of hot rooibos Yogi Tea on a cool evening, but right now it’s all about icedPressed Juicery has just released its first few fresh-bottled teas starring none other than these red and green superfoods! 1. Rooibos tea (Aspalathus Linearis) – pronounced Roy-boss – is indigenous to South Africa where it has been used by the African Bushman for hundreds of years. Rooibos means red bush, and the bush is not even red, it’s green. The red color only appears after oxidation during the tea-making process.
