You’ve heard the saying, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure?” Mark Wystrach, co-founder of eco-conscious footwear brand MOVMT, is taking this concept very literally. During a life-changing trip to Bali, Mark saw a glimpse of the waste pollution epidemic that goes on worldwide: heaps of trash and plastic bags littered across beaches, forests, and everywhere in between. Instead of simply staging a clean-up or donating money to a cause, Mark and his brother decided to go one step further and be the cause. It was in that moment that MOVMT was born: a line of hipster-chic footwear and accessories made from the very same toxic waste that pollutes our ecosystem.

MOVMT marries the very Chalkboardy values of social consciousness and stylish design by using a combination of organic eco-conscious materials and actual up-cycled plastics, cleaned from the beaches and forests of Bali and California, to create their line of wedges, flats, oxfords and everything in between. How does this innovative company stay grounded and motivated? By staying focused on the values that matter in the long run. In an industry where trends come and go, it’s refreshing to see Mark and his team stick to their guns and dedicate themselves to being the positive change they want to see in the world. Here’s how this creatively conscious co-founder keeps his balance…

Daily necessity for sanity...

Music – listening to it, playing it, writing it or seeing it live. Music is everything!

favorite way to take a break....

…is to go surfing, do yoga, box or run barefoot on the beach. Exercise relaxes me and helps me tune out the noise of this world and allows me to properly think straight. I revel in taking advantage of the greatest gift I have, which is my health.

best tactic for staying calm under fire...

…is to be the water that flows around the rock and not be guided by fear.

Fav way to refuel...

Sushi and a good movie.

Stress-busting ritual:

Riding my Harley through the mountains.

Things that always bring me back to center...

Going home to my family’s ranch in Sonoita, Arizona.

Monthly must...

A massage at Lamai Thai Massage on Abbott Kinney on Venice.

Mantra for slowing down...

“It’s not how far you go, but how go you far.” It’s from one of my favorite movies, Ski School.

Situations when I turn my phone off...

Sundays.

Cause closest to my heart...

5 Gyres and the fight to stop single-use plastic pollution, which is the most unnecessary and easiest to stop through education and awareness.

Where I find sanctuary...

Home at The Ponderosa on the beach in the Palisades.

How I find rest in my chaotic schedule...

I was born with the ability to take 20-minute cat naps!

Best piece of advice on balance...

An old family friend named Doc Clyne once told me to focus on being the best son, friend, brother, business partner and lover I can be – and everything else will fall into place.

Advice I'd give to my 16-year-old self...

Stay away from anything ending in schnapps.

Biggest inspirations...

My family and friends.

Current mantra...

Expectation is the worst of all traveling companions.
