Cafe Gratitude is one of those quintessential LA restaurants where the ambiance and experience is just as fulfilling as their wholesome food. If you live in L.A., you know. If you live elsewhere, you’ve probably heard – possibly because the place is always packed with celebs and dishes sport names like “I Am Radiant.” This 100% organic plant-based restaurant has a knack for transforming what was once deemed hippie communal food into seasonal and gourmet comfort food the city is hooked on.

One of our latest winter drink obsessions is their creamy turmeric latte. Certain superfoods have reached ultra-trendy levels in the past few years and turmeric is one of them. On one hand, it’s odd–we’re talking about a spice that’s been valued for thousands of years. On the other hand, we’re not mad – everyone can benefit from more of this incredible root.

We asked Cafe Gratitude to share this incredible recipe so we can all make it at home on chilly winter days – here it is, packed with omega 3-rich hemp seeds, dates, immunity-boosting fresh turmeric juice and whole vanilla bean…

Cafe Gratitude’s Turmeric Latte

Ingredients:

14 oz water
2 Tbsp hemp seeds
2 medjool dates
1 oz fresh turmeric juice
small piece of vanilla bean
pinch of salt

Directions:

Blend together all ingredients. Warm up and serve!

  1. Love this latte! Is it possible to replace the fresh turmeric juice with dried somehow? Or is that no bueno?

    • Hi Evalla, Here’s what I do to get the best turmeric (it’s not juicing, but for me the closest thing)
I buy whole organic turmeric root at Whole Foods, I grate it over parchment paper with a Microplane zester/grater
when it has dried for 3 or 4 days, I simply put it in a pestal & mortar and grind it into a powder.
I keep it in a shaker w/organic pepper actually and put it on everything from eggs to pasta. my understanding is that turmeric is not effective unless consumed with pepper. Hope this is helpful! LOVE for FEBRUARY!

  2. How do you get the turmeric juice?

  3. Fantastic. I was wondering about the juice. I thought that I read somewhere that tumericisn’t effective unless heated. Who knows, could have been another spice. Great idea with the pepper shaker tho.

  4. worth mentioning that the dates should be first soaked in water for a few hours to soften, otherwise they do not blend very well.

  5. My ayurvedic M.D. oncologist suggests that I have tumeric/pepper 2 x’s a day. He had recommend that I use tinctures that I order from a company called Banyan. I order several ayurvedic tinctures from them, particularly since my they are are company that treats their employees and the rest of the earth with respect.

  6. OMG YOU GUYS — you can make also make this as an iced or blended latté for summer!
I was really excited to make it, and then realized it said turmeric *juice*. I only had powder, so I threw it in my magic bullet and added some ginger & cinnamon, and used frozen banana pieces instead of dates. Also did a splash of unsweetened coconut milk.
And it actually turned out AWESOME! 🙂
Thank you for this inspiration! <3
