Going local has never been more fun. Especially in Los Angeles. The explosion of homegrown artisans and small, locally-curated shops here in L.A. has the whole city in a local-loving frenzy. While we love our exotic imports and all the micro-loan-related goods that give back, there’s also something so special about buying what’s made in your own backyard.

Ellen Bennett with her well-constructed, sturdy, but stylish aprons, is one of our favorite L.A. artisans of late – and we’re not alone. Made right here in L.A., Hedley & Bennett is the apron of choice found in many top kitchens around the foodie-sphere. Such celebrated chefs as Nancy Silverton, David Chang, and Nobu Matsuhisa are part of the Hedley & Bennett “Apron Squad.” We’re happy to announce that, starting this month,  a few lucky Pressed Juicery employees will be added to that apron-donning list.

Inside Pressed Juicery Santa Monica and Pressed Juicery Studio City, employees will now be rocking Hedley & Bennett’s signature aprons as they juggle juice and dole out favorite flavors. We love this combo of two classic, L.A.-rooted companies and urge you to check it out for yourself!

Let us know what L.A. artisans you’re loving lately for a chance to win a Hedley & Bennett apron of your very own! Here’s the woman behind all of this stylish tidiness herself, Ellen Bennett, with a little more about the aprons and to tell us what living well in L.A. is all about…

The apron maker: Ellen Bennett of Hedley & Bennett

Apron Name: the Michael Grey

About this apron: Named after our mentor, idol and chef Michael Cimarusti of Providence Restaurant in Los Angeles, this apron is in his complete honor, simple, humble and perfect. It’s made of American brushed canvas with one chest pocket and two lap pockets, brass hardware and cotton straps.

I’m usually grabbing juice… before I run into the office for a crazy day filled with meetings. I love buying 3 or 4 to just stick on my desk and knowing I’ll get plenty of protein and vitamins. They practically replace water for me sometimes. I also grab juice after lunch as an afternoon snack around 3 or 4. It holds me over for a few hours and is practically like a desert!

Healthiest habit: My love for running and doing sporadic marathons

Apron you wear at home: the Ivy

3 other L.A. businesses YOu love: Heath Ceramics, Broome St General Store, Mohawk General Store, Dinosaur Coffee, and Guisados

Current motto: I have like four that I live and die by…

Leap while looking.  Just do it and figure it out along the way!

If you can’t get in through the front door, climb in through the window.  There’s always a way to make it happen- period!

Strive to astonish.

Wake up and fight.  We are all so fortunate and lucky to be here every day and be healthy and alive that no second should be wasted and you should get up and get out there! Make things happen!

  2. I love heath ceramics in LA and SF — such timeless pieces. March SF and the Healdsburg SHED are also great places to see the beautiful works of local artisans!

  3. Since Hedley & Bennett is already taken, I think I’d have to go with Grist & Toll — the urban flour mill in Pasadena. What they are doing for alternative and artisan heirloom grains, on a small but very public scale, is inspiring and authentic; making and supporting change within their industry. And big thanks to Ellen, for being such a strong-willed and positive local artisan!

  6. 1) Middlebar – makes a kick-ass Bloody Mary mix, as well as, pickles specifically for cocktails
    2) m.greenwood – jams. incredible jams.
    3) Agree with commenter above about Grist & Toll – she is the only flour mill in Los Angeles. I can’t do her justice in explaining why she is so unique, best to talk to her.
    4) PUREnola – incredible raw granolas.
All of these folks are in LA.
    Thanks!

  8. I am a big fan of Semolina Artisanal Pasta made in Leah Greenstein’s home kitchen in east LA. The texture is amazing (even Jonathan Gold agrees), the product stylish and well-made, and her attention to detail makes me proud to support a local artisan!

  10. I very recently moved to Arizona so it’s not quite my “hood” yet, but back home in Utah we had Amano Chocolates by Art Pollard. I had to chance to work with both the chocolates and the man when I served at Communal Restaurant in Provo. The milk chocolate is warm and creamy and the dark chocolate melts into a rich lava perfect for someone such as myself who is known to indulge in a sinfully chocolate brownie from time to time. Art is clever and eccentric. I always had the feeling that his wandering mind and tendency to be rather aloof were just the outward signs of a man ever creating. If you ever find yourself on Old Geneva Rd heading North from Provo, Utah do yourself a favor and stop in.

  11. I live in SF and my favorite artisan is the one and only Aleksandra Zee (aleksandrazee.com). She is insanely talented and beautiful human being. Her wood work is exactly what I love about art taking natural resources and infusing color, geometry, and love into a new product. She is also an explorer and when she isn’t in her shop she is on some adventure that inspires me to get outside and enjoy all the beauty the Bay Area and the world has to offer! If you haven’t checked her out yet it is a must! Also follow her instagram @aleksandrazee. I am a chef in SF for a small cafe and I would LOVE to win a H&B apron. 🙂

  12. I’m loving imagine goods aprons right now because they are made in Cambodia by women rescued from sex slavery. I live in Lancaster PA. I think that you can never have enough aprons, as they become very special heirlooms.

  13. I am crazy about Stormy T’s pickles. He’s based in SLO, CA and is rocking the home kitchen.

  14. Asha Tea House in Berkeley, CA is the best place for artisan teas and made-from-scratch fresh fruit teas!

  15. I love SF’s farmgirl flowers. They work with American-only farmers to deliver (by bike!) absolutely gorgeous burlap-wrapped bouquets wherever you want in the city. The flowers they use are so much fresher, vibrant, and unique compared to many of the online merchants who have turned flowers into a commodities business – not what you want when you’re trying to send a heartfelt gift!!

  16. I’m really loving Heath ceramics. I’m obsessed with their mugs and Welly mason jars. Now that there is a chill in the air it’s all about making fresh jam and jelly. Even though I live in a city it feels great to have these local shops that make this big city feel a lot smaller. Xxoo

  17. I live in LA and I always feel at home at Caffe Luxxe. Caffe Shakerato is my go to. It’s the perfect place for some me time. I also love how so many cruelty free vegan beauty products are being made in a place I call home. One of my favorites is ellovi’s lip butter. I wish I could meet them so I could confess my love to them.

  18. I love Reza Kassai’s artwork. I have a couple pieces in my home which I purchased here in LA. They’re dark yet whimsical. People who see them either love them or hate them.

  19. The macadamia/almond milk iced latte at G&B Coffee (@ Grand Central Market in DTLA) just blows my mind and makes me feel super energized and clean after drinking it. It’s the best non-dairy latte in L.A. (and I’ve tried so so many). I would love to know who does their flower arrangements – the flowers are always so unique and just gorgeous in a dark sort of way, which I love. I’ll have to ask next time I’m there. Oh, and the new G&B baseball caps they’re selling are so cool.

  20. Grist & Toll has to be my favorite weekend shopping spot. What they are doing for locally grown grains without GMOs is amazing. So many people are unhealthy due to the amount of white, starchy foods they eat and there is minimal nutrition in the white flour you buy at a grocery store. Grist & Toll is going back to basics, milling grains the way our great grandparents enjoyed it. Grains without chemicals and milled in small batches. The taste is amazing. I entered a pie making contest at UCLA because my pie crust turned out so well by using their flour. I recommend this place to anyone wanting to make their bread recipes even better.

  21. Calleen Cordero is the LA shoe artisan of the decade. Her hip, comfortable designs are made right here in LA. Her designs are timeless. I still get compliments on shoes and handbags that I’ve had for over 10 years. If you buy a pair, you will become addicted like I am. Her designs are pricey, but her annual wearhouse sale is going on now at the Sunset Plaza store!
