The best days here in our office start with team members’ homemade edible experiments. (These grain-free superfood cake donuts are a killer case in point.)

The latest creation to cruise through our doors? This homemade coconut yogurt from our workshop with the ladies of Sweet Laurel Bakery. If you’re hooked on buying buckets of coconut yogurt from Erewhon or the like(a habit we don’t discourage), then this simple fermented recipe might save you major dollars in the long run.

Learn why we should all be eating more of this protein and probiotic-rich food here, then enjoy the homemade coconut yogurt we can’t stop craving for yourself…

Homemade Coconut Yogurt

2 cans coconut milk
2 teaspoons cassava flour (optional, this thickens the yogurt)
1 tablespoon maple syrup
2-3 probiotic capsules (prebiotic free)*

*the probiotics must be prebiotic free or the fermentation will not happen properly

Sterilize two glass jars and lids. Set aside.

Place cans of coconut milk in a bowl. Whisk in optional cassava. Open probiotic capsules, and dump the inside powder into the bowl and stir well.  Add the maple syrup. Pour into sterilized jars and allow to sit in dehydrator at 110 for about 12 hours. You can also place your jars in a turned off oven, with the oven light on, for 12-18 hours.

Remove from dehydrator or oven and allow to set in fridge, about 6 + hours.

Top your homemade coconut yogurt with this gain-free granola recipe.

  1. Oh my gosh! Probiotics are my life and I haven’t tried coconut yogurt yet. I’ve been looking for a healthy version for years after giving up dairy and this might be it! Thank you!!

    • Hi, a thought from Australia! I have just discovered non-dairy coconut yoghurt here, delicious, Coles supermarkets sell it.

  2. Can you please give me some suggestions of a good cost-friendly probiotic that doesn’t have prebiotics – it’s a little tricky to find online. Thanks!!

    • Hi Lindsey! I like Flora’s Advanced Adult Formula! You can find it on Amazon ;). Enjoy!

  3. Hi! Could you sub Raw Local Honey for the Maple syrup?

  4. I would also love to know if Raw Honey could be subbed for the Maple?

  5. Mine turned out runny. Do you heat the coconut milk and cassava before you incubate? I didn’t.

  6. Try coconut cream instead, and don’t use the water in the can.

  7. Are you sealing the jars tightly when placing in the dehydrator or leaving them loose to allow venting?

  8. Is there something else you can use instead of cassava flour?

  9. Hi! Thank you for your yogurt article. One question why do you say the fermentation will not happen properly if prebiotics are in the probiotic capsule starter? I am very familiar with prebiotics such as FOS/inulin. I am researching the best base to ferment probiotics for dairy free yogurt. Thought prebiotics might be good until I came across your article. Thank you.

    • David, it means that if you’re going to make yogurt with a probiotic capsule, you want to open the capsule and dump the powder into the recipe directly

  10. What strength probiotic do you recommend? 10 billion or more? I have 50 billion will that work? Thank you,

  11. Sounds like the editorial team that replied didn’t read the article. I have the same question about “probiotics containing prebiotics” and because of the answer above, I wonder if the entire article is invalid. Otherwise please explain “ 2-3 probiotic capsules (prebiotic free)*
*the probiotics must be prebiotic free or the fermentation will not happen properly”

  12. Ha – agreed, the response looks like it should have landed on another reader’s question. We’re not sure why our author Laurel recommends against the prebiotic inclusion here, but you can see her own comment in this feed for a product recommendation to check out the ingredients further: Flora’s Advanced Adult Formula
