Glow On: Start Pouring Oil On Your Problem Skin

Just like the claim that eating fat makes you fat, the myth that oily products make your skin break out is completely false. Sure, toxin-laden gobs of slick facial moisturizers should be avoided at all costs, but the fact is…brace yourselves…the key to a glowing, balanced, clear complexion is slathering on purely natural oil. And, just like with oil pulling or cooking, the best oil-busing weapon of choice is none other than the almighty coconut oil.

We wanted to get all our facts straight, so we asked Rikita Kapadia, the founder of the up-and-coming Cocovit, to break down the basics of oil-on-oil action. Made from freshly pressed organic coconut milk, this miracle cream heals pigmentation and scarring, prevents free radical damage, stalls premature aging – and yes, it’s got anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, so you can say sayonara to all your skin woes. Here’s Rakita with the deets on how this multitasking, multi-talented oil can change your skin around – for good this time.

Why Oil + Oily Skin = Best Friends:
What if we told you that the best product for a oily, acne-prone complexion may in fact be… more oil? The key to a clear, bright, and balanced complexion may actually lie in slathering additional oil on your face – more specifically, coconut oil.

For those with sensitive skin, or those prone to acne, the conventional wisdom has always been to use oil-free facial cleansers and the like. But it may surprise you to know that one of the best facial cleansers available – even for those with naturally oily skin – are in fact, oils. Without getting too Walter White on you, the basic chemistry behind this concept has to do with the simple fact that “like” dissolves “like.” We’re here to share the nitty gritty on how and why oil works, and how to incorporate it into your daily beauty regime.

Why oil is necessary for oily skin:
The sebaceous glands of your skin naturally produce an oily, waxy substance called sebum that protects your skin from irritation, the elements and infection. Over-production of this substance can lead to clogged pores that lead to acne and other skin issues. In the past, the way to combat this was to wash your face over and over again like a Noxema model, getting rid of all the oil on your skin. But this logic is flawed – what you’re actually doing is stripping your face of these needed natural oils, causing your glands to go into overdrive, creating more sebum in a very vicious cycle.

The best way to restore balance to overly oily skin is to apply additional oil – pure, organic oil. The organic oil will dissolve the excess sebum that has hardened with impurities/toxins and is stuck within your pores. Ultimately, this allows your skin’s sebaceous glands to slow down sebum production, leaving skin healthier and more balanced.

WHY COCONUT oil work best:
One of the best oils to use as a cleanser is pure, raw organic coconut oil with its potent blend of enzymes and nutrients. Coconut oil also contains a high percentage of lauric acid, lending it incredible anti-bacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. After it cleans your skin, the oil then acts as one of the best moisturizers available, as the unique combination of fatty acids it contains closely mimic the natural oils found on your skin.

At Cocovít, we harvest fresh organic coconuts from a eco-reserve in South India, producing an exquisitely pure and exceptionally potent form of coconut oil. Using a heatless extraction process, Cocovít maximizes nutrient and enzyme potency by leaving the oil raw & untouched – as nature intended.

How To Cleanse + Moisturize with Coconut Oil

Apply

Apply a dime-sized amount of Cocovit Coconut Oil and gently massage onto your face for approximately 1-2 minutes.  Feel free to let the oil sit on your skin for an additional 30 seconds to really penetrate and remove dirt and impurities.

Steam

Warm a clean wash cloth with warm water (note: warm, not too hot). Lay washcloth flat on your face for approximately 1 minute.  The steam from the warm washcloth will help remove the toxins from your pores.

Remove

Gently wipe off the oil using the washcloth.

Moisturize

Your skin will be clean and moisturized. Apply additional Cocovit Coconut Oil for extra moisturizing.

Repeat

Repeat morning and night.

  1. Coconut oil is just great for everything – cooking, frying, cleansing, moisturising… and virgin coconut oil smells just divine!

  2. They fail to mention that some people are sensitive to coconut oil and it can exacerbate acne because of its high oleic acid content. Oils that have a high Linoleic acid content tend to be better for acneic skin.
