Trends Vs. Classics with Katherine + Hillary of Who What Wear

Half of fashion is about trends, the other half about timelessness. The same is true for the world of wellness – quinoa and kale are our floral micro-prints, and good hydration is our little black dress.

With the idea of classics and trends in mind, we asked the stylish founders of Who What Wear, our go-to daily style report, to tell us about their daily habits, must-have staples and fashion “uniforms”, as well as the trends in fitnesswear and sustainable fashion that they’re loving now. We love Katherine and Hillary’s responses, revealing both their great taste and different personalities…

Trending morning ritual:

Hillary: Checking email, Twitter and Instagram in bed for 30 minutes, then a shower.
Katherine: Checking email and Instagram, and sharing my favorite stories from our three websites with my social network.

Classic cup:

Hillary: Coffee with almond milk. If I’m making it at home, Stumptown. If I’m going out, it’s to Alfred Coffee or Coffee Commissary, where I drink whatever deliciousness they make me.
Katherine: A lot of water and my protein shake.

Your Classic look:

Hillary: Leather skirt, T-shirt, jean jacket, pointy-toe heels.
Katherine: Golden Goose jeans, T-shirt, Isabel Marant or Jenni Kayne blazer, and Manolo BB pumps.

Mindful Fashion Trends You're Loving:

Hillary: Minka Kelly recently introduced me to fashionABLE, a company that works with women in Africa to create handcrafted scarves, leather goods, and blankets. Their Mamuye Tote ($178) is a simple and chic carryall that’s quickly becoming my go-to weekend bag, and I very much appreciate the fact that it’s helping support women-run small business cooperatives in Ethiopia.

Katherine: Edun F/W 2014 Collection. Danielle Sherman – the former T by Alexander Wang design director and co-founder of The Row – took the lead at Edun a couple of seasons ago, and her F/W 14 collection for the brand is truly exceptional. The Patchwork Shift Tunic ($1295) and Suede-Pocket Melton Coat ($2150) are a gorgeous, modern nod to fall’s major ‘70s trend, while the Stripe-Hem Pencil Skirt ($395) is sleekly sporty in all the right ways. And lest you forget, the Bono and Ali Hewson-founded brand has a conscience too, and is dedicated to manufacturing, producing, and promoting fair trade in Africa. Win, win.

Classic lunch:

Hillary: A long, lazy lunch at A.O.C., Laurel Hardware, or Café Stella is never a bad thing. Anywhere I can sit outside is tops in my book.
Katherine: Mr. Chow and Spago never go out of style.

Trending lunch:

Hillary: Lately, I eat the Harvest Kale Salad from Sodapop’s every day, sometimes with grilled chicken or a scoop of chicken salad, sometimes not.
Katherine: Usually some sort of chicken, rice and veggie combination.

Trending supplement:

Hillary: Does rosé count?

Classic look:

Hillary: Either a full midi skirt in a dressy fabric and a camisole or a 1950s vintage fit-and-flare dress. I also like a bright lip, think: hot pink, electric coral or vibrant red.
Katherine: A cocktail dress with a black leather motorcycle jacket, black pumps, slicked-back hair and a bold lip.

Accessories classic, trending or otherwise:

Hillary: I’ve been quite dedicated to my mismatched stud earrings. One is a “lucky eye” from the Jennifer Meyer x The Zoe Report collaboration and the other is a diamond triangle from Mociun.
Katherine: My wedding rings, my earrings from Amulette and One Jewelry.

Trending health drink:

Hillary: Again…does rosé count? Upon occasion, I will drink the Green Energy Potion from Liquid, as long as I can order it with lots of cayenne pepper.
Katherine: Pressed Juicery.

Health trend you're loving:

Hillary: I get B-12 shots on the regular.
Katherine: Acupuncture.

Classic cardio must:

Hillary: Walking to coffee, the grocery store, the newsstand and dinner. Body By Simone is awesome too.
Katherine: Tracy Anderson.

Fitnesswear Trends You Love:

Hillary: I grew up on the beach in La Jolla, so I really love seeing chic surf gear for women, like the Pret-A-Surf x J. Crew Multistripe Short-Sleeve Rash Guard ($180). It’s got a slightly Dazed and Confused vibe, which fits in perfectly with what’s going on in fashion right now.

Katherine: When it comes to fitness, I wear all black. I work out so early in the morning (6 a.m.) that no part of me wants to consider an “outfit,” so it’s best to stick with a uniform. I wear Gap pants and sports bra, usually a black LNA tank top, and my black Nike Free 5.0+ running shoes.

Daily must-reads:

Hillary: So many! TheSkimm, The New York Times, and NYMag.com are at the top of my list, though.
Katherine: Jason Hirschhorn’s Media Redefined newsletter.

Classic and trending cravings:

Hillary: A piece of dark chocolate with sea salt. Pretzel bread from Rockenwagner, and apparently kale, since I eat it every day.
