We couldn’t be more excited to enter the fall – with special thanks to wellness leaders like this month’s Guest, Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Dr. Fuhrman invented the ANDI system which scores foods according to its’ nutrient density. Nothing’s more thrilling than entering this cozy season knowing how high our favorite fall foods, like roasted squashes, wilted greens and garlic-y everything, rate according to experts like Dr Fuhrman. This month, we’re bringing you insights from his brand new Eat To Live Cookbook – pure, kitchen-ready guidance and application from his best-selling book, Eat To Live. Touting the powers of high-quality whole foods (he considers himself a “nutritarian,” how much do we love that?), our Guest Editor has proven a true hero in realm of natural health, guiding countless families and individuals toward a nutrition-rich, whole foods diet that prevents disease, elongates life and boosts an overall sense of well-being. Here’s Dr Fuhrman on October, his new book and eating to live…
Dear Chalkboard readers,
Autumn is upon us and with the colder temps and the fall harvest also comes the unofficial beginning of the holiday eating season. Beginning with Halloween, our homes and offices overflow with sugary treats that are much more like tricks for our bodies’ digestive and immune systems. Before we have a chance to blink about that sugar overload, we’re busy planning for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year’s feasts. It goes without saying that this time of year is a challenge – even among those who consider themselves healthy eaters. But it doesn’t have to be…
If I am able to impart only one thing to Chalkboard readers, it’s this: that making decisions with the impact it will have on your long-term health and happiness in mind will help you make the right choices all throughout the year. Keeping your long-term health in mind will keep you aimed toward living a vibrant, happy and longer life.
Ten years ago when I first published Eat to Live, I could not have imagined that more than a million readers would embrace my “nutritarian” diet style. By giving your body the nutrients it needs, you provide it the fuel to help prevent a host of lifestyle diseases (high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders) as well as fending off colds, flu, and other infections. And by eating according to the formula: Health=Nutrients/Calories, you maintain a healthy body weight for life. I have seen this approach transform the lives of so many patients – and it can work for you.
After many requests from our Eat To Live community and with the help of my favorite nutritarian chefs, I’ve finally put together the Eat to Live Cookbook. It includes 200 recipes, food preparation and shopping tips, and the needed skills to meet your health and weight goals, or to improve on an already healthy diet.
So, as the season is upon us, I urge you to ask yourself if what you are planning on eating is the best plan you can make. My goal is to help you discover healthy choices that don’t have to be sacrifices. The research is in: diets don’t work, but superior nutrition will lead you on a path to good health, ideal weight, and a long and happy life. Make this season your time. I hope you’ll join me in transforming your health – achieving and maintaining excellent heath can be rewarding and delicious – and I’m out to prove it to you!
To your good health,
Joel Fuhrman, M.D.
