Interior designer Lauren Geremia’s style is not basic. From the ravens she’s had painted on the ceiling of a local San Fran watering hole to the vintage phone booth she’s installed in a tech start-up’s headquarters, this young designer has a flair for the unusual. And yet every space she touches feels fresh, effortless, organic and inviting.

We love coming across designers like Lauren whose creative and stylish workspace designs are uplifting all of our ideas about what it’s like to be at work. Her firm Geremia Design specializes in residential spaces too (check out that bathroom above!). We’d love to send Lauren out to reader’s homes one-by-one for custom art installations, but, on a more practical level, we’re sharing her ideas for quick changes and easy refreshes that are pretty killer too. Check them out – and get to rearranging!

Personal Prints

Printed photos are making a comeback for me. After seeing so many of my friends through the lens of social media, it’s nice to bring a film camera out and take more spontaneous pictures of my loved ones. Decorating with prints from your holiday and vacation adventures will keep that spirit going through the winter.

Purge

Donate things that you don’t want to live with. Purging is cathartic and will help you feel fresh and organized. One man’s trash….

Rearrange

Rearrange the furniture. Moving things around is a good work out and way to clear the cobwebs. A new perspective on your home can be helpful and create a need for a great new piece or provide a way to use a space.

Art

I will always recommend buying art. It’s good for house and great for the world. If you need recommendations, it is really our favorite thing to shop for.

Candles

The smell and look of these candles really works for me this winter. They are really nice to fill a non working fireplace or on top of a mantel.

Fresh Rugs

Get new rugs if you can – especially if your holiday parties are as lively as mine. A new color or pattern underfoot can really change a room.

Inspiration

After the new year I get ultra-ambitious about pursuing new hobbies and resolutions. Decorating with reminders for new aspirations is a good technique to keep you on track. Inspiring books on your coffee table about traveling or maybe some new beautiful tools will help you start the new year with motivation.

Light it up

Get a new chandelier. We still have a few more months of early darkness. Dramatic lights are great investments. Everyone will notice and it will always be a focal point.

De-season

Take down your seasonal decorations in a timely fashion. Last year I waited until February because I was so proud of my tree. The attachment turned into procrastination and then it was just depressing. There are other holidays to look forward to and things to celebrate.

Go Vintage

Buy something old and beautiful. Antiques are a great way to balance out some of the commercial gifts you may have received over the holidays. My favorite site for anything vintage is 1stdibs. It is an amazing resource.
