If there’s anyone we trust to have a handle on her workout routine, it’s Julianne Hough. There’s something about approaching fitness with a dance background like Julianne’s that seems to automatically inject fun into the equation. We’re picking up on all those good, high energy vibes from Julianne below (how can a girl be so high vibing with out ever being the slightest bit obnoxious? This girl’s got the skills and we’re taking notes!) and joining this fit-crazed gal in L.A this weekend for Shape Magazine’s very first Body Shop Pop-Up. Get all the deets below!

Until then, try mastering Hough’s “three buns, no sweat” look at barre class this week, take a gander at her new fitnesswear collection (we’re all about the neon bra), and let her current mantra sink in deep…

Moment I fell in love with fitness:

I come from such an active family, and there’s a lot of us! My brothers and sisters and I were constantly dancing and performing, so an active lifestyle is really all I’ve ever known. And on top of that, we grew up in Utah, which is all about the outdoor living. We would go on hikes, bike rides, rocking climbing, you name it, we did it.

For motivation:

Obviously I want to be physically fit, but being mentally fit is just as important. And by being active, I feel like my mind is more clear and I’m able to have a better attitude about the grueling workouts that most people don’t like to do early Monday morning.

5 things always in my gym bag:

Layering pieces from MPG Sport so I’m prepared for anything, a water bottle, Proactiv Cleansing Wipes, Palmers Cocoa Butter Chapstick and hair ties!

Fave things to wear in the studio:

I love a great crop top, like the Revo from MPG Sport. It’s sexy and fun and just makes me feel like a warrior when I wear it.

Most exciting thing happening in fitness right now:

Fitness used to be its own category, as a segmented, regimented part of a person’s day that most people didn’t look forward to. I love that fitness truly has become a lifestyle – more people are working out because of how it makes them feel on the inside, not just the outside.

On my workout playlist…

I’m usually in classes, so whatever they choose!

Favorite way to hydrate:

You will rarely see me without a reusable water bottle, it’s one of my main accessories! I also enjoy sparkling water and adding fruit to it, to add variety.

Favorite post-workout fuel:

After I workout, I drink a protein shake right away. But I’m a hungry bunny, so then I’ll have a salad with a bunch of veggies, chicken, and quinoa for lunch.

Shoe or equipment I love:

I love the MPG Convert Gym Bag! It has the perfect amount of space, and 2 separate compartments. After CorePower Yoga, I like to toss my sweaty clothes in the bottom section so they’re away from everything else! (TMI?)

I stay inspired by:

My peer group, family, going to church, and it doesn’t hurt when you have the cover of SHAPE coming up!

Fave quickie workout when not in gym/traveling:

When traveling I tend to adopt my brother Derek’s advice, which is to work out throughout the day. If you’re grabbing a snack, do some squats while you’re there. If you have an errand, walk there. Little bits of exercise throughout the day are hardly noticeable, but once you get in the habit can have a big effect!

Most unexpected item in my gym bag:

Poop bags for Lexi and Harley! You can never be too prepared!

I know I’ve had a good workout when:

I can ring the sweat out of my clothes lol. It takes me a good five minutes to have the energy to walk to my car. You can always tell though when I’m blasting the music, singing at the top of my lungs if I’ve had a good workout or not.

Secret weapon tip:

Ankle and arm weights. I’ll wear them when I’m doing things around the house and without noticing, I’m getting a workout in!

Fave outdoor fitness activity:

How can I choose just one? The one I do the most is definitely hiking in LA with Lexi and Harley. But growing up water skiing, jet skiing, and tubing at my family’s lake house in Idaho, I would definitely choose to do those things first.

Braids, hat or pony:

It might sound crazy, but I rock 3 buns – one on the top of my head, one in the middle, and then a low bun. This style was great when my hair was shorter, but I haven’t been able to let it go. And just so everyone knows, I started doing this before Rey did in Star Wars. Boom.

Gym to street tips/secrets:

Layering is key. And it’s all in the details. I designed my collection for MPG Sport with fashion-inspired details – sheer mesh panels, angled seams, exposed straps, or a cute cover-up. Add in your favorite pair of sunglasses and you’re ready for the day.

Current mantra:

My personal mission statement is: “Be an infectious light of love and joy, to celebrate the little things and inspire others to embrace their true essence.”
