On My Bookshelf: 7 Inspiring Must-Read Books According To Kris Carr

We’re nerd-ing out and reading up this fall. There’s nothing like a brand new book to harness all our autumn ambition and enthusiasm. We’ve rounded up almost 30 essential wellness reads inside The Shop and we’ll be adding 3 more reader picks by the end of the season.

In the mood to flip pages? We’ve asked our September Guest Editor, wellness guru Kris Carr to share what’s been inspiring her lately. Check out all six of her must-read book selections – we’re tempted to swipe up the entire collection…

Circling The Sun by Paula McLain

I just finished reading this novel about the remarkable Beryl Markham – my new power animal. A woman before her time, Beryl was a record-setting aviator and horse trainer who grew up in early twentieth-century Africa. She was also a wild child, tomboy and adventure seeker who attracted the hearts of many, including a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who Isak Dinesen wrote about in Out of Africa. This book will transport you. I loved it so much I read all 300-plus pages in two days! Man, would I love to hang out with this chick. Total. Trailblazer. CHECK OUT HERE

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

Who doesn’t need to simplify their lives? Well, this awesome book lays out a clear approach to decluttering that actually works. If you’re like me, you can actually feel your energy diminish when there’s too much crap laying around. I like, clean, open, airy and sacred. Since practicing Marie’s technique, that’s exactly what I’ve created. P.S. I gave it to my mom, too, and we’ve become decluttering buddies. Unfortunately one of her dogs ate the first chapter. I think he was pissed because she was starting to get rid of some of his toys (um, he has more than he could ever play with in this lifetime!). CHECK OUT HERE

Taking the Leap: Freeing Ourselves from Old Habits and Fears by Pema Chodron

I recently took a workshop with Pema at the Omega Institute, where she talked about the Buddhist idea of shenpa, or the process of how we get “hooked” on negative thoughts and beliefs that keep us stuck. In this book, Pema helps us identify our hooks so we can leap toward a healthier and happier way of living. She reminds us of our fundamental goodness, teaches us how to stay present and encourages us to drop the limited thinking that blocks the love and compassion we can feel for ourselves and others. This book is short and simple. I highly recommend you add it to your spiritual syllabus. My copy is highlighted and dogeared. CHECK OUT HERE

My Fight / Your Fight by Ronda Rousey

OK, Ronda Rousey couldn’t be more different than Pema Chodron, but I adore her! This woman is a powerhouse. She’s not afraid to take risks, kick maximum ass and dominate a world that, until very recently, was ruled by men. An Olympic medalist in judo, Rousey went on to become the UFC’s undefeated women’s bantamweight champion. Though she has become the toughest woman in the world, she didn’t start that way. Born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck, Ronda had to fight to survive. As a result of her difficult birth she didn’t speak until she was three years old. At eight, she lost her beloved father, but not long after that, she found judo. This book chronicles her rise, the sacrifices she made, her grueling training and her fierce fights – both in life and on the mat. Arguably the most dominant athlete in UFC history, Rousey is responsible for the inclusion of women in the Octagon. What I love most about her: She’s defiant, confident, vulnerable, real and raw. CHECK OUT HERE

Goddesses Never Age by Christiane Northrup

This feisty book shows how to embrace aging with passion, purpose and pleasure. It identifies the difference between growing older and aging, and lays out a clear path for how women can feel great at all stages. I interviewed Dr. Northrup for my blog a few months ago, and was really struck by what she shared. Here’s a sample: “Trust me when I say you are not destined to have to battle with your body, trying to get it to behave. You can get off the road that leads to illness, frailty and a reduced quality of life. With a little courage – and a look at your underlying beliefs about growing older – you can have a life that’s rich in relationships, health, social connections and everything your heart desires, regardless of your chronological age. It’s never too early to become an Ageless Goddess – someone who embraces ageless living. At our core, we are eternal beings.” Amen to that! Dr. Northrup’s books have changed the landscape of women’s health. You’ll love this one if you don’t already have it! CHECK OUT HERE

Yoga For Life by Colleen Saidman

When Colleen sent me an advance copy of this book, I devoured it over a weekend. It’s one of the best books I’ve read this year and it’s a must-read for every woman who wants to feel good in the skin she’s in, develop confidence, forgive the past and create a brilliant future. From a rebellious young woman with a dangerous heroin habit to a globe-trotting fashion model to “First Lady of Yoga,” Colleen Saidman Yee tells the remarkable story of how she found herself through the healing power of yoga – and then inspired others to do the same. Colleen’s funny, moving and compassionate approach helps women set down their shame and pick up their voices. Her work has helped me find more joy through asana, honest self-reflection and loving kindness. This book is a treasure – it’s also incredibly well written and delicious. CHECK OUT HERE
