Toxic Timeout Ingredient Focus: Stearalkonium Chloride

WHAT IS IT? Stearalkonium chloride is a stearic acid-derived chemical which is primarily used as an anti-static agent, a surfactant and an antimicrobial. Designed by the fabric industry for use as a fabric softener, this toxic chemical has somehow found its way into many hair and skin care products. Some companies have started using it as a key conditioning ingredient in their products, as it’s a cheaper alternative to natural  ingredients that achieve the same task, like certain conditioning proteins.

HEALTH RISKS: This chemical has been shown to cause irritation to the skin and eyes and has potential negative effects on the nervous system. Products with this ingredient should be avoided. That is, unless you want to wash your hair and rub your face with chemical fabric softener!

Healthy Alternative: Pure coconut oil makes an excellent conditioner for both hair and skin. It can be found at natural grocer’s everywhere and makes a great natural conditioning agent. We love RMS Beauty Raw Coconut Cream.
