Toxic Timeout: Hydroquinone
WHAT IS IT? Hydroquinone is a chemical commonly found in skin lightening products and moisturizers. It works by decreasing the production of melanin pigments in the skin and is marketed as a blemish and age spot-reducing ingredient.

HEALTH RISK: A possible carcinogen, neurotoxin (substance which affects the nervous system), developmental and reproductive toxicant and skin sensitizer, hydroquinone poses a number of potentially hazardous health risks. It has also been known to cause ochronosis – an irreversible disease of the skin, which results in visible black and blue lesions.
SAFE ALTERNATIVE: For great moisture without the toxins, we love brands like Tata Harper and this rebuilding moisturizer.
