Toxic Timeout: DMDM Hydantoin

WHAT IS IT? DMDM Hydantoin is a white, crystalline solid used in the formulation of shampoos, hair conditioners, skin care products, moisturizers, bath products and makeup bases and foundations. DMDM Hydantoin is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative, which prevents personal care products from spoilage.

HEALTH RISKS: Exposure to formaldehyde-releasing ingredients such as DMDM Hydantoin can cause various allergies, (skin, eyes, lungs) is a known human immune system toxicant and a possible skin toxicant. Some individuals develop allergic skin reactions which typically appear as eczema or contact dermatitis. Herbicides, paper and photography supplies commonly contain DMDM Hydantoin. Not exactly the kind of ingredient you want on or even near your face!

How To Avoid: Read those labels! Simply knowing what to look for is half the battle. We love shampoos by Elemis for their super pure formulations.

  1. I looked at the ingredients list of Elmis and they are just as bad as the commercial used ones. I would highly recommend Bubble and Bee organic or Beyond Organic products.

  2. It is hard to believe manufacturers are adding such hazardous ingredients in skincare and cosmetic products. I am the owner of the website https://lubeforsex.com and I also advise to all my visitor not to use personal lubricants that include DMDM hydantoin, for it features formaldehyde and is known to be an irritant. Thanks for the article, great stuff can be found on your website indeed!
