Superfood Spotlight: Lucuma Powder

Superfood:  Lucuma Fruit

source: Lucuma is a Peruvian fruit that grows in the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains.  This superfruit was referred by the Incans as “gold”, perhaps because of both its golden color and its decadent sweetness.  Lucuma naturally falls from trees once it has reached ripeness. The taste of lucuma is incredibly unique, with rich flavors of maple, custard and caramel.

Benefits: Lucuma has been receiving a buzz as a healthy sweetener filled with fiber, vitamins and minerals.  It is a rich source of carbohydrates and contains high concentrations of beta-carotene, vitamin B3 (niacin) and iron.  It is also low in natural sugars and does not create blood sugar spikes, which is great for diabetics and makes lucuma suitable for anyone living a healthy lifestyle.

how to Use:   Try adding lucuma to desserts, smoothies or anything that needs a healthy sweetener!  As well as eating the fruit, traditionally, people apply an extract of it topically to speed the healing of skin cuts and abrasions.

We recommend: Navitas makes an excellent quality Lucuma Powder, available here.

Have you tried lucuma?  If so, tell us about how you like to use it!
