Superfood Spotlight: Honeydew

What You Need To Know: When you think of sweet summer treats, what pops into your head? If you’re anything like us, probably the thought of biting into a juicy slice of freshly cut melon! While watermelon gets most of the press in the hot months, we’re even bigger fans of its green cousin, honeydew! First cultivated in France and Algeria centuries ago, honeydew melon is ripe and ready for the picking between the months of May and October  –  which means you still have time to enjoy this nutrient-packed superfood at its best.

Why You Should Try It: Honeydew melons possess one the highest vitamin-C content of all melons, which helps aid in tissue repair, iron absorption, building a strong immune system and can even guard against the cancer-causing effects of free radicals. The most unique (and tongue-twisting) component of honeydew has to be the presence of zeaxanthin, from which it gets its green hue and vision-protecting superpowers. Its potassium content aids in muscle repair, and its presence of both soluble and insoluble fiber helps to not only aid digestion, but also regulates blood sugar levels.

Let’s Get Together: Simply sink your teeth into a ripe honeydew melon slice much like you would with watermelon or cantaloupe: Make sure you choose a melon with pale golden skin and a sweet scent if you’ll be consuming it right away. Maybe you’d prefer to sip your honeydew instead? Try Pressed Juicery’s Greens 6, a blend of spinach, honeydew, kiwi, lemongrass and cilantro for a sweet summery treat!
