Satsang: Come Together

‘Sat’ means truth and ‘Sanga’ means company or association.  Satsang means the coming together of like-minded individuals for the purpose of seeking liberation, truth and union.  It’s a really beautiful concept about the positivity that results from people with similar spiritual goals and shared values coming together.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, one of the most essential yogic texts, says, “In India, there is a tradition where people sit together with a person who has spiritual knowledge and discuss matters of the soul.  It is called Satsang.”  Krishna Das, one of my favorite kirtan singer, writes, “Satsang is where people gather together to remember, to turn within and find their own inner path to the One.”

Attending a yoga class, going to a kirtan event or simply gathering together with your friends for an uplifting conversation are all expressions of satsang.  Seek out satsang to reinforce your beliefs and deepen your understanding.  Hang with uplifting company as a means of staying on the path and deepening your practice.
