We’re not going to be shy about it: we’re a California-centric crew – and there’s nothing more golden than the perfect pair of jeans. Just in time for festival season, one of our denim obsessions, Re/Done, is releasing their very first pairs of perfect vintage jean shorts and we’re giving away a pair. We’ve been tempted to enter our own giveaways before, but seriously….

Re/Done, founded by Sean Barron (formerly of Joie) and goddess Alessandra Ambrosio’s beau, Jamie Mazur, has become something of a thing among denim aficionados. Each pair of deliciously reclaimed denim is refitted and posted to the Re/Done site where the blue jean obsessed can hunt down their perfect pair before the one-off creations sell out. Re/Done counts Erin Wasson and, naturally, Ambrosio as fans and we can’t get enough. Read our interview with Barron and Mazur below, absorb their inspirations for 2015, then enter our contest like you’ve never entered before to experience pure blue jean bliss.

The Chalkboard Mag: If there’s an era of denim that was your favorite, what was it?

SEAN BARRON: I think it’s now. Jeans aren’t just a work pant anymore. You see everyone wearing jeans – models, fashion editors, musicians – everyone’s finding a way to make their jeans unique and cool.

TCM: What is your favorite trend for denim in 2015?

SB: We love that everyone’s moving away from the stretch jean, and really appreciating the vintage premium denim look. It’s more about individuality now.

TCM: Denim icon:

SB: Erin Wasson, Cindy Crawford, and Steve McQueen.

TCM: Who’s denim game is always on lock recently? Who are you loving?

Jamie Mazur: APC is killing it right now.

TCM: Fave pair of jeans:

JM: Salvaged vintage Levi’s that you can’t find anywhere else; they really tell a story.

TCM: Talk to us about the new denim shorts:

SB: We’re doing two types of shorts. One is a classic denim cut-off short, the other is a longer knee-length walking short. Both are very classic, but appeal to our fashion-forward customer too.

TCM: Top vintage shopping tips when it comes to denim:

SB: Don’t buy the first jean you see. Find the wear pattern that you love. If possible ask the store owner or vendor where the jeans came from – it’s great for personal storytelling.

JM: Look for the details – the fading and character in the denim itself.

TCM: What do you consider denims ultimate match: the white T, the white button-up or the leather jacket?

SB: A worn-in white T with jeans is the epitome of heritage. Mixing it up with a black moto leather jacket is also never a bad idea.

TCM: 3 people or brands inspiring RE/DONE right now:

SB & JM: APC, Leandra Medine, Chiara from Blonde Salad, Camille Rowe, the list goes on.

  1. I’m obsessed with a pair of vintage high waisted Levis that I got from Goodwill & cut into shorts. I always get complimented on them-little does everyone know I only got them for a few bucks 🙂

  2. The other day I went jean short shopping, when I got to the register I had two pairs. One was a tight short little pair and the other was a looser longer pair. I went with the second pair because of style: high waist, denim wrap/tie thing and overall comfort. I wear them everywhere now!!

  3. I love denim. Plain and simple. The ability to dress up or dress down denim is exactly why it’s been a staple piece of my wardrobe for so long. Quite possible my favorite pair of denim shorts are ones I had for years. They were my favorite; I wore them EVERYWHERE. One day I’m buying a few things for a DIY shelving project at Lowe’s when my shorts catch on a screw sticking out of a 2×4 and the rip right down the side. Total devastation. After literally crying in a home improvement store, I go home and pull out a serrated bread knife. Yes, a big, giant knife. I went to work on those shorts. I shredded the front legs and back pockets until Freddy Krueger would have been proud. Then I sewed an old piece of heirloom lace where the gaping rip had been and WALA! My first pair of destroyed, vintage shorts. Still wearing them everywhere to this day and loving every minute of it!

  4. I love worn-in/worn-out denim! Quite a few years ago I ran across a great pair of bleach splattered vintage Levi cutoffs at a thrift store that I couldn’t resist…and my obsession began. A few weeks later I was visiting my parents and my mother had a box of clothes from her 20’s that she was getting ready to donate to her local thrift store. I rummaged through the box and found a handful of her Levi jeans from the 70’s. Needless to say, these absolute gems did not make it to the original intended destination. I cut two pairs of them off and the other ones I left intact. I continue to add to my tattered collection of denim but my beautiful mothers array of Levi history….. will forever and always be my favorite!

  5. Redone are literally my favorite brand of jeans that I have ever come across! I had been looking for jeans like redone’a for so long as I am so inspired by vintage Cindy Crawford days! These jeans could not have been more of a perfect find for me! I am a dedicated denim wearer and anyone who knows me knows that I will pick denim jeans over a skirt any day! My personal style has always been vintage denim all the way, I follow heaps of blogs 80s and 90s inspired blogs which give me so much inspiration for my outfits! If I had to a favorite denim piece from my wardrobe it would definitely be my vintage Levi’s high waist shorts for sure! They go with absolutely everything and I basically live in them all summer I’ve even added some cool patches to them to add that extra edge!

  6. Re/Done does it right! Have not been so enamored since my first love: a pair of vintage 501 cut offs painstakingly sourced and cropped by my sister via eBay years before such things were ubiquitous in thrift stores. These shorts have seen and been seen all over the world—in cities, on beaches, at festivals, with sandals, with booties, with pearls. Such history and sentimental value is hard to beat, but Re/Done is up to the task. New decade, new shorts! Help me celebrate my 30’s in style.

  7. Love vintage high waisted Levi’s in all lengths but for summer the longer knee length style works for me. I am 69 years young and I can still rock a pair of Levi’s with a white shirt.

  8. Thanks, Chalkboard Mag, for introducing such classically inspired denim makers! Plain, simple denim is my favorite. In the summer I pair a high-waist, vintage Levi’s short (with buttons instead of a zipper, found at a shop in Harajuku a couple years back) with a black or white button down top. With my well-worn AllSaints leather jacket, I’m good to go for the evening.

  9. My denim obsession has been a slow burn throughout the years. Inspired by cowboys, LA, Mick Jagger, and of course the thrill of finding the perfect pair (whether thrifting or not) — the passion continues. Re/Done made the jean short I’ve been looking for. The hang from your hips, effortless cool, ‘yes I just threw these on and let me peel the hair off the back of my neck while I lean on the hood of your car’ high school rebellion days vibe. Taking inspiration from my current denim icon: 90’s Drew Barrymore — I’d top with a denim jacket and wait for my call to grace the cover of Seventeen.

  10. I’m a jean junkie and Re/Done is now my new denim obsession!!! I can’t wait to get my hands on a pair of these babies. Levi’s have never gone out of style and my style icons like Erin Wasson prove to me that they’re bigger than ever! Festival season is here, y’all, which means the greatest congregation of hippie-chic style is about to commence. To own a pair of Re/Done Denim and strut the fashion scene in all the awesomeness — the rips, tears, stains and whiskers — that they are, would rock!!!

  11. I found my favorite pair of vintage Levi 501’s in an op-shop in Italy – I have worn them to death and to this day they are still my absolute favorite item of clothing! If there ever comes a day when I no longer fit them I won’t be able to part with them, I will probably resort to framing them and hanging them on my wall! Denim that is reused has its own continual story, my time with the jeans is only a small part of the story – I think that is so beautiful

  12. Raised a 90s kid, I have a deep love for denim. I feel best in a worn pair of jeans and a loved-in t-shirt – classic and comfortable – running around barefoot whenever I can. My cutoffs are all vintage Levis that I’ve discovered at thrift stores for less than 5$ and cut myself. I’d love a pair of Re/Done to sport this summer! I fell in love with the brand immediately. I’m in love with the pieces, including the long jeans. A few of my style icons include Jane Birkin and her daughters, Lou Doillon and Charlotte Gainsbourg, as well as Erin Wasson, who epitomize classic yet unique style. I have to mention my mom – I have amazing old photos of her outfits and heard many stories, including when she bought her first pair of jeans as a teen.

  13. Justin and Britney are my denim sporting icons. Clearly.

  14. There is no other article of clothing on this Earth that makes me feel more me than a pair of denim jeans.
Denim is timeless. Marilyn Monroe, cowboys, and this girl are OBSESSED.

  15. Released in 1971, Madman Across the Water by Elton John, is all shades of DENIM! An iconic album, biggest hit off the album – Tiny Dancer, first lyric of the song, “Blue jean baby, LA lady, seamstress for the band…”
DENIM makes me feel like a rock star! The way a pair of DENIM jeans hugs my body, feels good on my skin, makes me strut when I walk, or run around with the kids – I am at home when in DENIM!

  16. 90s denim at it’s best… The cast of Beverly Hills 90210… oh and who could forget Debbie Harry’s wardrobe of thrift store finds — her double-denim outfits was one of my favorite stage looks.

  17. It’s funny that this was just posted, as I am currently searching for the perfect pair of jeans – I’m trying to upgrade my wardrobe to durable pieces that fit just right, and jeans are on the top of the list. It’s time to set aside the $10 jeans (I know, kinda embarrassing) and buy my first adult jeans. So far I’ve tried on over 15 styles from 5 different stores, and none have really won we over yet. It’s such an adventure and I can’t wait until I find them!

  18. Nothing makes me happier then finding a grail pair of jeans, thrifting is great but I do love my distressed All Saints denim. My favorite piece is my dad’s Levi’s jacket from the 70s that I have, it’s so perfectly worn in it just makes me happy looking at it. I’ve yet to own any pieces by Re/Done and now it’s a must – those shorts are incredible. My denim icons are Kurt Cobain, my dad who raised me working in the garage building cars – his unintended mechanic look was/is the best.

  19. I love how classic denim is, but mostly how tough it can be… What other article of clothing can take the abuse denim can? Besides, the more beat up it gets the better it looks. I guess that’s why I’ve always preferred vintage.
