Beauty Brush Up: DIY Brush Cleaner

We cleanse our face morning and night daily, but how often do you wash your makeup brushes?

Our brushes help us apply makeup for a flawless finish, but collect all sorts of debris along the way including dust, makeup, oil and bacteria. If you don’t clean your brushes on a daily basis, all the debris I mentioned is being applied to your face along with your makeup! If this grosses you out, here are a few steps you can take to make sure you’re taking care of your brushes as well as your skin!

Get on a regular brush cleaning routine:

1) Daily light cleaning: Take a makeup remover towelette or a antibacterial hand wipe to lightly clean your brush. Gently swipe your brushes back and forth on the wipes to clean after each use.
2) Deep cleansing: Once a week, take some time to use a brush cleaner to deep clean and condition your brushes! No need to shell out the big bucks to purchase a fancy brush cleanser. Just follow these simple steps to make your very own natural brush cleaner!

Brush Cleanser: Deep Cleaning

Ingredients: 2 parts dish-washing liquid (or baby shampoo) and 1 part olive oil
Directions:

  1. Mix dish-washing liquid, olive oil and a little bit of water on a plate.
  2. Gently swish brush bristles around on plate. You’ll begin to see the makeup and debris break down onto the plate.
  3. Take brush under running water (always have brush pointing down) and further work up lather.
  4. Rinse well with water and gently squeeze excess water out without pulling bristles.
  5. Air dry with bristles pointing down. You don’t want the water to work it’s way up the brush because it will loosen the glue holding the brush together.

Take these steps to clean your brushes each week will not only extend the life and quality of your brushes, it’ll help prevent unwanted blemishes and breakouts. A clean face is a happy face!~

Until next time, stay pretty… inside and out.
