Toxic Timeout: DMDM Hydantoin

WHAT IS IT? DMDM Hydantoin is a white, crystalline solid used in the formulation of shampoos, hair conditioners, skin care products, moisturizers, bath products and makeup bases and foundations. DMDM Hydantoin is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative, which prevents personal care products from spoilage.

HEALTH RISKS: Exposure to formaldehyde-releasing ingredients such as DMDM Hydantoin can cause various allergies, (skin, eyes, lungs) is a known human immune system toxicant and a possible skin toxicant. Some individuals develop allergic skin reactions which typically appear as eczema or contact dermatitis. Herbicides, paper and photography supplies commonly contain DMDM Hydantoin. Not exactly the kind of ingredient you want on or even near your face!

How To Avoid: Read those labels! Simply knowing what to look for is half the battle. We love shampoos by Elemis for their super pure formulations.
