superfood ice cream with spirulina and chlorella

Get your blender out, we’ve got another amazing superfood ice cream to share from our our friends at Addictive Wellness. This homemade healing dessert is loaded with anti-aging ingredients like spirulina and chlorella and one powerful player you probably haven’t become obsessed with yet — Styrian pumpkin seed oil.

While the spirulina and chlorella in this superfood ice cream recipe are certainly an acquired taste, they’re so functional for our health we don’t mind a bit. Plus, the addition of this rich, nutty oil balances things out nicely. Discover why we’re all over these vibrant scoops from Addictive Wellness founders, AnnaBlanca and Sage…

A note from Sage:

As nice as it would be if everything tasted as good as chocolate, some of nature’s most powerful foods can be a bit of an acquired taste! Take spirulina and chlorella, for example. Chlorella is a single-celled green algae and the highest natural source of chlorophyll (10% by weight). It also contains very high levels of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), which help support cellular regeneration. Spirulina is a blue-green algae; the blue comes from the phycocyanin pigment, which supports stem-cell production in the bone marrow — which is huge for anti-aging. When you see people on Instagram saying they used “blue spirulina” to make a vibrantly blue food creation, they’re not using a special variety of spirulina that is super blue, but rather phycocyanin that has been extracted from spirulina. Spirulina is the highest natural source of protein (65-71% by weight) and contains significant levels of gamma linolenic acid, an anti-inflammatory that targets the nervous system.

These two superfoods are so powerful that I love sharing them with others, but there’s no denying their flavors take some getting used to! I myself had been using them for years before I finally began to enjoy the flavors of straight spirulina and chlorella. But not to worry! You don’t have to drain your willpower day in and day out for years forcing yourself to eat these algae, hoping that one day you will start to like them! You can actually turn them into an incredibly delicious creation if you do it right.

This recipe is also a really fun way to enjoy Styrian pumpkin seed oil. Now this ingredient is the complete opposite of the algae we’re using — it tastes amazing in just about anything! You can put it on a salad, in a smoothie, take a shot of it on its own, have it with Brazil nuts, put a drop on top of a piece of chocolate… It’s flavor is so versatile, the possibilities are limitless. The Styrian pumpkin seed comes from Austria where pumpkin-growing conditions are ideal. The pumpkin’s shell is actually inedible — they are grown exclusively for their seeds. The oil is very dark in color and has much higher antioxidant levels than most oils. These seeds and their oil are traditionally used to support prostate and bladder health. Modern science has found that pumpkin seed oil is effective in reducing enlarged prostates, especially in the case of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

A Note from AnnaBlanca:

Ladies, girls and all amazing superwomen! This vibrant colored ice cream is a well-disguised yet remarkable tool to help the men in your life feel strong, content and deeply inspired to make you even happier than you already are.

Blending up this cool green treat for him is a great expression of caring and love since the benefits of the ingredients are incredibly powerful in supporting his vitality! The best part? Sharing a bowl together will give you delicious benefits too, especially from the phycocyanin, which has great anti-aging powers. Long story short, you will live longer so you can be happy longer. That sounds like a pretty darn good deal to me…
