We must agree with Katie that slow-paced weekend mornings are the best. Somehow, even the most mundane morning rituals help us to recalibrate our senses when we go about them at a leisurely pace once or twice a week, rather than in a mad dash.

Even on their most harried mornings, we’re still in envy of the work Nathan and Katie have to get down to: coordinating with local farmers for a dinner in a Pennsylvania garden, taste-testing recipes for a piece on dutch babies or approving illustrations from their most recent jaunt in the evergreen woods of Oregon.

There is a sweet calm to the Kinfolk way of life, as seen in its pages and felt at their gatherings around the world. That coolness seems to come straight from the heart of it’s producers, Katie and Nathan Williams. We spent a morning looking over their shoulders and finding out how these emerging influencers begin their day…

My alarm is set for…

5:45 a.m.

First thing I do when I wake up is…

Hit snooze.

I can’t start my morning without…

A warm drink, and a few moments to read in quiet before the day hits.

Breakfast is normally…

A scone or muffin from the bakery next door, or granola and Greek yogurt with honey.

My morning is filled with…

Taming the in-box, creating lists and scheduling the day.

Daily uniform…

Black or tan pants and loose, comfortable shirts.

Favorite morning beverage…

Chai soy latte.

I’m usually listening to…

Pandora, a playlist off Grooveshark, an audio book or podcast.

When I can, I sneak in…

A quick stretch, not technically yoga, but a few down dogs usually sneak in there.

I start working by…

Making a list of the priorities for the day, checking in with others we’re working with and making sure they’re all good.

I’m usually juggling…

Multiple correspondences. We coordinate with lots of different people to pull our projects together, most are remote, and we have to stay on top of check-ins and looping in all of the proper individuals.

I get my creative juices flowing by…

Reading books and articles, listening to podcasts, and seeing what our inspirational muses are up to…

My favorite morning distraction is…

Having a slow morning on the weekend. Taking my time, getting ready slowly  no rushing, just going with the pace that feels good. It’s the best.

My current mantra:

Stay true. We experience a lot of exterior and industry pressure to do certain things, or conform to certain standards. Although there is an amount of this that’s necessary, we find it important to stay true to our goals, our mission, and to be unique (which often involves listening to our guts rather than critics).
