isla fisher natural beauty secrets natural beauty tips

We clamor over beauty secrets from those who paint the faces and coif the curls of our favorite stars. Makeup artist, Katey Denno, is just one of those beauty pros, spending most of her days on-set or on-location getting pretty faces gorgeous. Katey, however, has taken the whole process to the next level, using only natural and organic products on her clients!

Obviously, this is one beauty maven who is ahead of her time – and we’re thrilled to share insights like hers on The Chalkboard. We love knowing that the natural beauty industry is creating lipsticks and highlighters that a pro like Katey can count on to hold their own at A-list photo shoots! If you don’t believe us check out this look on the gorgeous (and hilarious) Isla Fisher. Here’s Katey…

Isla always makes me laugh. She’s definitely one of  the funniest woman I’ve ever worked with, and I love that she can crack up the room with a joke, a story – or simply a look!

During the many days of press for one of the recent films in which she stars (The Great Gatsby) I convinced her that she needed to branch out from her usual nude lip color because she looks fantastic in a bold lip. From that day forward, she let me experiment, painting her mouth with bright pinks, deep berries, and bold reds. Since then, every time I arrive to get her ready to walk a red carpet, shoot a picture for a magazine or make an appearance on TV, she points to the outfit she’ll be wearing and asks with an excited smile: ‘What do you think? Should we do a lip?’.

For the shoot below, we opted for a more neutral palette, one that every woman can feel beautiful wearing, and easily accomplish on herself!

The eyes:

To make her brown eyes smolder, I pressed two shades of shadow from Neal’s Yard Remedies cosmetics line in Barley and Cocoa, and into the inner corners I lightly pressed Kjaer Weis shadow in Cloud Nine to add even more dimension.

I smudged Dr. Hauschka Kajal eyeliner in 07, Mellow Sienna Brown, along the inside of her lash line, on both the top and the bottom.

On her lashes: multiple coats of Korres mascara in Obsidian Black.

The face:

Isla has been on a plane more times the past few months than most women are in 10 years. Recirculated airplane air is incredibly dehydrating! I always start each makeup application with a face oil massage, but this time I really focused on pushing a lot of the product into her skin: Ila Face Oil for glowing radiance.

Once it had fully absorbed, I massaged in Soleil Organique 100% mineral sunblock for face, SPF 45 so that her fair skin wouldn’t burn during our long shoot in the sun. It’s very emollient and easy to spread, and the ever-so-slight white sheen inherent in all mineral sun blocks fades quickly.

I applied Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere Luminous Foundation Stick with a foundation brush very sparingly to create a flawless complexion, and then gently pressed a slightly damp beauty blender all over her face to ensure the perfect, natural texture.

To give her a beautiful rose bronze glow, I tapped Alima Pure Bronzer in Belize which as a slight reflective quality, and Alima Pure Satin Matte Blush in Pink onto the apples of her cheeks, and fully buffed it into the entirety of her cheek using a big soft brush.

The lips:

I wanted Isla’s natural lip color to remain, but in order to look polished for the photo taken in the afternoon sun, I knew I needed a little help from a lip product. I first slathered her lips with balm, let it penetrate for a few minutes, and then had her blot it with a tissue. I lined her lips and then filled them in entirely with Red Apple Lipstick pencil in Blush, swiping on many layers of a fantastic new lipstick that’s soon to come out from Burt’s Bees on top (stay tuned for their next line of amazing new colors and brand new textures!), and finished the application by gently tapping my ring finger along her lips to press the product in fully.

Make the look your own: we love finding most of these brands at our favorite online beauty go-to, Spirit Beauty Lounge. Additionally, find Burt’s Bees beauties here.
