We Had Lunch with Laura Dern + Need To Know Everything About Her Skincare Routine

WE RECENTLY ATTENDED a beautiful lunch in West Hollywood with actress Laura Dern to celebrate her new collaboration with True Botanicals, a seriously clean skincare brand we’ve been fans of since forever. Dern has recently joined True Botanicals’ “band of activists”— alongside Olivia Wilde and Zazie Beetz. All three beauties are outspoken advocates of the brand’s approach to transparency, highly effective products and dedication to the power of plants.

Laura herself doesn’t need to say much when it comes to skincare — her glowy, hydrated look speaks for itself, whether attending intimate al fresco lunches like this one or in high definition on HBO’s recently wrapped Big Little Lies (we weigh in on the cult-status show here).

The story behind Laura’s introduction to True Botanicals is as organic as the brand’s ingredients. According to Laura, she began using the products after discovering them through a makeup artist and noticed a difference quickly — including a lift in compliments about her skin. “People have been more complimentary than they’ve ever been about my skin. I saw that it worked better on the surface, and then I saw my skin change in a matter of a week.”

After getting a good glimpse at Laura’s complexion in real life — and on the heels of our BLL obsession — we did a little digging to discover what her skincare philosophy is all about and found a few discoveries of note…

TM Meditation helps. According to Dern’s interview with W, the star begins every morning with 20 minutes of transcendental meditation before diving in to a streamlined skincare routine. The connection between good breathwork, stress reduction and increased overall circulation has an undeniable effect on the vibrancy and calmness of the skin too (clearly).

On a simple consistent routine: In the morning, it’s a cleanser and the face oil, and that’s it for Dern. In an interview with Allure, Laura discussed how she deals with her sensitive skin by keeping things simple. “Not only do I have sensitive skin, but if it’s too complicated, I get overwhelmed and just don’t do anything,”

About on set beauty Whe I’m on set my makeup artist will use the True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil just to touch up, so we don’t even add more makeup,” Laura explained in a recent interview “It just refreshes the skin a little bit for a glow, but also, if things are getting into lines or pores, you can just smooth out the skin a little bit [with it], which is really nice.”

Date night skin Dern also told W, “Oh my god, the body oil and the body mask are also amazing. I just want to say: it’s very pre-date. You put the mask on and leave it on for 10 minutes, and then take a shower or take a bath and put the oil or the lotion on.”

On mixing it up Most days, she just sticks to a gentle cleanser, the oil, and SPF. However, that doesn’t mean she won’t try new things here and there. “It’s like going to the gym. If I’m going all the time, I need to shake it up. I really stick to that idea for how I take care of my body in general,” she says.  In fact, Dern has reportedly began experimenting with True Botanicals powerful vitamin C, telling W “In the evening, I’m loving mixing the oil and the serum with this vitamin C powder

Looking up your fall skincare routine? Add de-stressing elements like this sweet lavender oat milk latte we tried at Dern’s gathering as well…

Lavender Latte

Ingredients:

Directions:

To make lavender syrup, combine 1 cup of water and 3 tablespoons dried lavender flowers in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir in 2 cups of sugar (or 1 cup coconut sugar) until fully dissolved. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 1 hour. Strain the dried flowers out of the syrup.

To make the latte,  pull a 2 oz shot of espresso. Combine syrup with espresso.

For iced latte pour espresso and syrup mix into 10 oz of Minor Figures Oat M*lk and pour over ice. For hot latte, pour espresso and syrup into a 12 oz ceramic mug, delicately steam oat milk and pour milk into ceramic mug.

Drink with joy!
