THINGS CHANGE after having a baby, but these days stylish living is almost exempt. Instead of lugging around fugly-but-functional diaper bags, new mamas get gorgeous accessories like these; and instead of having to troll the internet for textbook-like websites, we have sites like Mother Mag.

Journalist and co-founder, Katie Hintz-Zambrano, created Mother Mag to fill a void she found after giving birth to her son. The result is a full-service, style-leaning modern parenting site like no other, because motherhood is about so much more than just taking care of a new little human: it’s about learning to feel fabulous in a postpartum body, seeking out style tips that suit the new you, and designing a nest where wellness thrives (and looks gorg).

We spent a morning exploring how the Mother Mag life looks in Katie’s own home. Get inspired by her adorable answers and make her power-smoothie ASAP…

My alarm is set for…

5:30 a.m. on those insanely long to-do list days and 7:30 a.m. on days when I don’t have to think about work until after preschool drop-off.

I can’t start my morning without…

Snuggles from my four-year-old son, Diego. My husband and I are into the co-sleeping thing!

Breakfast is normally…

An almond butter sweet potato pie smoothie via the Vibrantly Healthy Kids recipe, with a few curveballs thrown in. (See below for full recipe.)

Favorite morning beverage is…

See above! And if I’ve had a particularly early morning, I’ll sometimes go for an almond mocha frappuccino at Martha’s Coffee Co. to keep me wired/focused.

Healthiest daily habit…

Picking up my child from school and completely unplugging from work for a couple hours straight. As a workaholic, I’m so thankful to have that forced balance. Play is so good for the soul!

Daily uniform this spring…

I have a huge passion for California brands. My closet is full of dresses and jumpsuits by Doen, Kamperett and The Podolls, prints by See Sun, bags by Lotfi, shoes by Freda Salvador and Bryr, and Patagonia jackets. I love knowing the people behind these brands.

My favorite moment in the morning is…

It’s a tie between waking up and snuggling hard with Diego and also that moment of getting into the grove with creative work after he’s been dropped at preschool.

On the best mornings I…

Can sleep in and wake when my body wants to.

I start working by…

Flipping open my laptop and waiting until the gazillion tabs I have open load. Ugh.

Morning are normally filled with…

Snuggles and stress — wish the latter part wasn’t so!

I get my creative juices flowing by…

Reading (especially print), pow-wowing with other creative women and brainstorming article ideas in a massive Google Doc.

I’m most obsessed with this currently…

Planning an upcoming conference for creative and entrepreneurial women/mothers, which will take place in San Francisco on Friday, September 29th. It’s my solo passion project and there are some amazing women already on board. Stay tuned to Mother for the official announcement over the next few weeks!

I’m usually listening to…

Solange’s “A Seat at the Table.”

My favorite morning distraction…

Snuggles!

Always thinking about eating…

Lunch or breakfast at my most-favorite restaurant — Outerlands in Ocean Beach. Closer to home, newbie spot Media Noche in the Mission (I love the ensalada verde).

My current mantra:

It’s gonna be great.

The recipe I’m making (and how to make it!):

This smoothie…

Almond Butter Sweet Potato Smoothie

Ingredients:

1/2 banana
spoonful of almond butter or peanut butter (we like Justin’s)
handful of raw cashews
1 Tbsp hemp seeds
1/4 – 1/2 cup coconut milk
1 date
1/4 cup roasted sweet potato (if I have on hand)
dash of cinnamon
dash of Moon Juice Spirit Dust

Directions:

Put all ingredients in a wide-neck glass, blend with an immersion blender, and stick 2 straws in it!
