We’ve been talking hormones all month and we hope you’ve learned a little something that will help you avoid – or recover from – the hormone imbalances that are all too common these days. The basis of Dr. Sara’s new book is that certain food groups are related to the aggravation of specific hormones. The elimination diet Sara leads readers through in The Hormone Reset Diet starts with cutting alcohol and meat tin order to rebalance estrogen – a connection we never knew existed. Read through all seven hormones and the foods that can throw them out of whack. Try the diet in Sara’s book or just note these connections next time your body is feeling off…

You’re about to enter the circle of hormone resets (as shown in the above figure) that expedite major body transformation from the inside out. I know what it’s like at the top, after completing the first round of seven hormone resets – I can see the comprehensive view from here, and it’s amazing. Yes, you will fix your broken metabolism and lose weight. But more importantly, you will take the crucial steps you need to feel at home in your body again. You will break the relentless cycle of stress and weight gain. You won’t be constantly bloated, stressed, or sleep deprived. You will grow the happy and diverse bacteria that keep you lean and shed the bacteria that make you fat. After you take all these steps, you will have reset your metabolism.

The 7 Keys to resetting your Hormones

Estrogen

Go meatless: Reset your estrogen by excluding red meat and alcohol from your diet. (Note that this reset is essential for everyone, whether you’re a meat eater or not.)

Insulin

Go sugar free: Banish your cravings for sugar and reset your insulin.

Leptin

Go fruitless: Reset your hunger hormone, leptin.

Cortisol

Go caffeine free: Reset your relationship to stress and cortisol.

Thyroid

Go grain free: Activate your thyroid hormone in a powerful new way and reset insulin and leptin.

Growth Hormone

Go dairy free: Reset your growth hormone, which also improves insulin.

Testosterone

Go toxin free: Redirect your testosterone level to normal, and support the reset of estrogen, insulin, leptin and thyroid.

  1. Over how long of a period do you have to eliminate these items? And do you have to eliminate them all at once? I would be interested in doing this, but I am not sure I could go forever without fruit/alcohol. Hah.

  2. I have the same question as Jenna ^^ .. Is this a long-term (i.e., life) plan or are there certain/rough time lines for eliminating all or each of the food groups?

    • Jenna and Amy, I just finished Dr. Sarah’s book. The elimination challenge is for 21 days. Depending on how your body feels, you begin reintroducing after the 21 days are complete. Depending on the state of your hormones, you may or may not want to reintroduce certain items. I highly recommend the book! She’s amazing.

  4. Question based on the above – do you do this in phases? You don’t eliminate all of these at once right? What order is this done? Just would love some clarification.

    Thanks!

  5. I would say to eliminate all of the above at once for 21 days. You need to reset all of the hormones for them to balance out. It may seem extreme but if you are having any hormonal issues it really pulls everything together. I no longer have hot flashes due to these eliminations. I have modified as I got back into the swing. I still find alcohol a big trigger. I read Dr. Sara’s first book and it all made sense to me.

  6. I feel so much better after this process that I am not reintroducing a lot of those items. That won’t work for everyone, of course, but for me, it is great. I do not miss dairy and get calcium elsewhere. I have begun eating fruit again but not nearly as much as before. No meat, and as much organic and non GMO produce as possible. Wild salmon when I can get it. I live in a small town and am able to do it more easily that I would have guessed. I don’t miss coffee and now really enjoy lower caffeine herb tea and also an amazing drink “Anandamide” . This has replaced morning coffee. Very little alcohol – I need to lose weight anyway and all of this is helping. A glass of red wine now and then. I feel better when I am not drinking any alcohol but in social situations, I find myself wanting to join in.
