For her next post as our guest editor, the lovely Heather Taylor of LA In Bloom and Heather Taylor Linens invited us and some girlfriends over for an amazing flower arranging workshop. Familiar faces like Beatrice Valenzuela, Clare Vivier, Louise Bonnet, Simone LeBlanc and a handful of other flower-loving friends all met at Heather’s new gallery space in Culver City (check out Taylor De Cordoba’s site for the details on their upcoming re-opening!) where Holly and Becky from Holly Flora taught us the fine art of creating the most gorgeous arrangement. Inspired by the Dutch masters, their tips and tricks for putting together a stunning vase are great for pros and novices and will serve you well all spring, summer and beyond. Don’t forget to check out all the photos as well and Heather and Hollyflora’s video all about crafting the perfect floral bouquet for your home!

  • HERE ARE A FEW OF HEATHER AND HOLLYFLORA'S TOP TIPS FOR GORGEOUS FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS:

  • Tip #1:

Conceptualize the size of the arrangement based on the vase size, where it's going and what kind of photos you want to use.

  • Tip #2:

Once you've picked your vase, add water first.

  • Tip #3:

Make a "nest" of leaves which will create a backdrop of roughage which will stabilize your larger flowers and additions.

  • Tip #4:

Give every stem a snip before it goes in the water and cut it on the diagonal—don't forget to cut the leaves off of the stems if they will be submerged under the water line and cut between the thorns/nodes.

  • Tip #5:

Add large flowers and blooms next, and make sure to place them paying attention to dimension by adding different layers and heights.

  • Tip #6:

Don't be afraid to add an unexpected element like a shock of color or texture!
