non toxic sunscreen list

Sunscreen. Good for ultra-violet protection, bad for our oceans? The state of Hawaii is making moves to protect this living landscape, recently approving a bill to ban toxic sunscreen containing two ingredients believed to be killing coral reefs.

As reported in this article from NPR, “the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are used in more than 3,500 of the world’s most popular sunscreen products, including Hawaiian Tropic, Coppertone and Banana Boat, would be prohibited” by the ban, which is the first of its kind here in the United States. Why? According to a 2015 study of coral reefs in Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Israel, even just a drop of oxybenzone is able to strip a coral of its nutrients and bleach it white, disrupting and damaging other wildlife in the process.

We understand if the well-being of coral reefs isn’t exactly a topic at the top of your mind, though seeing an image of the damage that they’re experiencing can be a majorly eye-opening moment. The ban also has us ruminating on what these creams are doing to our bodies — if they are causing this much damage to life under the sea, what are they doing to our skin?

Finding a good, non-gross sunscreen can be hard; finding one that’s non-toxic and non-gross can be even harder. These three options are some of our favorites of late. 1. Beautycounter also makes a safer sunscreen that does not have oxybenzone and has an SPF of 30.

  2. This is insightful to know and the non-toxic versions look fairly good, I was particularly keen on the first Vive Sana one but paying $55 for a sun cream is a bit much – maybe if they did small sizes for trial versions, otherwise spending that much on something you may not enjoy using personally just doesn’t make any sense. Good to know Hawaii have banned those ingredients though, just shows if it’s doing damage to coral what it could be doing to the human body.

  3. Toxicity is one of the major challenges in our age. Hawaii and other countries around the world are starting to wake up. If we kill mother earth we will kill ourselves. We are more a part of this planet than most people like to think. Water is being contaminated – do we really believe this does not affect us? The Oxygen percentage in the air over most cities has droped by 20%? Do we really believe this does not have an impact on our health? With oxygen being one of the natural cleansers, revitalisers and the known fact that cancer cell are cells which thrive in a low oxygen environment? How many ‘scientific’ studies does the world really need to use its common sense? Anything which is toxic to the environment will kill the next generation and us. Yet, so many souls out their wake up and I love that your blog shows those who make a difference. Thank you!
