Estrogen Dominance herbs and supplements

Herbs and supplements are staples of any modern wellness pantry. They’re also a wonderful tool for supporting specific recovery journies.

For the past few weeks, we’ve been learning all about acommon hormonal imbalance, estrogen dominance. Holistic nutritionist and women’s wellness expert, Kristin Dahl, has broken down the topic and offered natural suggestions for healing. We’re continuing the conversation below with these holistic remedies to help push you down a path towards balance.

It’s best to work with a health practitioner to find the perfect combination of herbs and supplements to overcome estrogen dominance symptoms and bring back your vibrancy…Supplements For Estrogen Dominance

DIM + Calcium D-glucarate.  DIM is a strong estrogen metabolizer and helpful for those with estrogen clearance issues. Calcium D-glucarate is a natural substance that helps the detoxification process. Try a supplement that combines the two — take 2 capsules (600 mg) per day with meals.

Vitamin D3. This essential vitamin plays a role in regulating estrogen levels as well as supporting healthy functioning of the immune system. Try taking it in liquid form with 1,000-2,000 IU/day. It’s often a higher dose for those in need — have blood work done to see where your levels are. If you go for a much higher dose, do this only temporarily.

Vitamin B6. This helps boost progesterone production to counteract excess estrogen while supporting liver function. Try taking a capsule with 1.3 mg daily, with 1.7 mg daily for adults over 50.

Probiotics. Probiotics contain good bacteria which encourages further growth of good bacteria and discourages the growth of bad bacteria. This helps to rebalance gut flora if dysbiosis is present. Try a daily probiotic of 10-50 billion. (Take a higher dose for more severe cases — start slow and build. If desired, 10 billion can be taken as a preventative or maintenance.) You can also consume probiotic-rich foods. These are fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, natto and coconut yogurt.

Magnesium. This mineral is responsible for hundreds of enzyme responses that impact natural hormone balance. It aids in liver detoxification that detoxifies excess estrogen from the body. Try using magnesium chelate (natural form found in the body) or magnesium glycinate. Both are highly absorbable with low laxative side effects at 300-400 mg per day. If you’re having trouble eliminating or falling asleep at night, magnesium citrate may be more helpful for you. Try 200-400 mg per day (depending on bowel tolerance).

Progesterone Cream. Many of the symptoms of estrogen dominance can be relieved with natural progesterone cream found in most health food stores. Apply ¼ or ½ teaspoon behind your knees and inner elbows daily for two to three weeks prior to the onset of your menstrual cycle. Pause the week of your cycle. Use for three cycles max.

Seeds. Try seed cycling. This refers to the use of specific seeds at specific times in your cycle to promote normal hormonal changes during your cycle.

Herbs For Estrogen Dominance?

Chaste tree berry (vitex). This berry supports the pituitary gland to produce progesterone and luteinizing hormone — both of which are necessary for your body to ovulate, for regular menstrual cycles and to avoid symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Use a tincture 1 to 3 times per day for 3 to 6 months. It often takes 3 to 4 months to fully experience the benefits.

Burdock Root. This gentle diuretic aids to remove excess estrogen from the body by supporting elimination. Try a tea or infusion consumed daily.

Dandelion Root. This bitter herb helps in the detoxification process to remove excess estrogen naturally from the body. It’s a gentle laxative that helps increase bowel movements. Try a tea or infusion consumed daily.

Milk Thistle. Supports the liver while helping to clear excess estrogen. Use a tincture or capsules between 50-150 milligrams daily.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing this! SO many people don’t know what an ED is or how to try to balance it out. Hope you have an amazing day x

  2. Stinging Nettle is another herb that is useful for estrogen control, especially for men. It works by blocking estrogen production, and is very effective for prostate problems as well.

  3. Does this work for women in menopause and with full hysterectomy from endometrial cancer.
