Drink bone broth. Eat real food. Make the most of powerful essential oils like frankincense. These and other essential wellness tips from our January Guest Editor, Dr. Axe, show you exactly why we picked this wellness phenomenon to kick off the year with!

The truth is that little changes like the below can have a huge impact on our health – some of our favorite health tips are so simple, they almost seems too good to be true. Get real with a couple of these accessible health ideas we can actually commit to from viral wellness sensation, Dr. Josh Axe

When I feel like I'm getting sick…

I drink chicken bone broth or have a scoop of bone-broth protein powder mixed in water. And then I take a combination of multiple supplements: elderberry, echinacea, oil of oregano (between one and three drops taken internally) and vitamin D.

Simplest health tip ever:

Just change breakfast. People don’t have to change their whole diet. Think about it: If you just change breakfast, you’ve already changed 33% of your diet, which is a huge step. And I recommend that everyone have a superfood smoothie for breakfast, which is made of coconut milk, one scoop of bone-broth protein powder and one cup of frozen berries.

My health philosophy in one sentence:

Food is medicine.

3 supplemental foods I rely on:

Bone broth; fermented, probiotic-rich foods (like kefir and sauerkraut); and herbs (including turmeric, ginger, rosemary, etc.).

Staples in my diet:

Bone broth; fermented foods; salmon; organic, grass-fed beef; coconut milk, coconut oil; organic fruits and veggies

How I stay hydrated:

Lots of water. I also have smoothies and vegetable juices.

Habit I hope more people catch on to:

Having bone broth every day, whether it’s in a smoothie, soup or in a mug on its own. The health benefits of bone broth are incredible, and it can impact every area of your health, from your digestion to your skin.

My detox regimen:

I do a bone broth/vegetable juice fast for a period of three to ten days. During that time I drink only chicken broth or vegetable juice, and my favorite juice blend is a combination of celery, cucumber, carrot, beet, ginger, lemon, kale, cilantro and parsley.

Once a week for my health I...

Sometimes I’ll do a bone broth/veggie juice fast one day a week, typically on a Monday after a weekend of heavy eating or drinking.

Fave workout:

Interval workouts like BurstFit. I can get the same health benefits of a long cardio session without spending hours in the gym.

Best healthy food option on-the-go:

Definitely the superfood smoothie. Three ingredients and I’m out the door.

3 staples always in my medicine cabinet:

Essential oils, vitamin D and probiotics.

At least once a week I cook…

A slow cooker full of bone broth.

If I could give just one piece of health advice...

It would be to start having at least one serving of bone broth per day.

Current reading list:

Healing with Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford, The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson and Today Matters by John Maxwell.

Ingredient I always avoid:

I always avoid white flour products and white sugar. Those are actually two ingredients, but I think it’s super important to stay away from both of them.

Crazy health idea that actually works:

Grounding, which is, essentially, walking outside barefoot for at least 20 minutes a day. It is believed that the body runs through a type of electrical current, and grounding directly connects the body with the earth’s electrical current, which can reduce inflammation, lower stress hormones and help you sleep better.

5 things always in my travel gear:

Homemade toothpaste made with coconut oil, baking soda and peppermint and clove oil. Homemade deodorant that’s made with beeswax, coconut oil, baking soda and sandalwood essential oil. Frankincense oil. Lavender oil. Workout gear.

Non-negotiable:

I don’t eat fake food. Everything I eat is from real food. So that means no artificial sweeteners, no fast food or refined foods, no white sugar and no high-fructose corn syrup.

Simplest way to improve health:

Start consuming bone broth regularly. It’s the ultimate gut-healing food, and when your gut is healthy, your whole body can heal.

  2. Miso soup is the way to go imnsho… south river miso in garlic pepper, dandelion nettle and aduki bean are wonderfully nourishing, loaded with probiotics and free of any animal byproducts…

  3. The vitamin D that you always have, is that the D3 that you sell. If so. is it necessary to have more D then that?
I have been taking Bone Broth everyday now for several months. Love it. Also take your probiotics.
