Ayurvedic contributor, Sahara Rose, author of Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda, Sahara Rose, is teaching us about the basics of doshic types below. Read through, then take her quiz and dial in to the results to achieve greater health and balance…

Just like we each have a unique fingerprint, each person was born with a specific mind-body constitution, comprised of the natural elements. In Ayurveda, the world’s oldest health system, we call these various types “doshas.” Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga focused on wellness, originating from the same Sanskrit texts 5000 years ago. Fostering the mind-body connection, Ayurveda believes that the foods you eat influence the way that you feel. Unlike the one-size-fits-all approach to health in the West, Ayurveda is focused on the individual, believing that the key to health is eating the right foods to your dosha.

The word Dosha literally means “energy.” The three Doshas are: Vata (air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (earth)

We are a combination of all three doshas but in varying amounts. Some of us are naturally more airy, while others are naturally fierier and others more earthy. In this quiz, I’m going to help you figure out which is your primary dosha so you can gain deeper insights into your mind and body.
