From Hollywood to the San Francisco Bay, it seems all of California is on a juice cleanse. No matter where you find yourself glugging those greens, one thing is certain: the buddy system works. The thought of just one other soul out there skipping their latte and lunch for the day is wildly comforting as you make your way through all those juices. A cleanse is a disciplined three-to-five day endeavor, however delicious the juices may be.

Earlier this spring, we asked two of Refinery29’s West Coast editors to let us in on their conversations while on a cleanse – their “detox diaries,” as we like to say. Los Angeles Editor, Ali Hoffman and San Francisco Editor, Angela Tafoya passed notes during their 3-day juice-capades and shared their thoughts and conversations with us. We’re glad to see that, when it comes to cleansing, we’re all on the same page – coffee cravings and all. We’re also impressed with the ladies’ restraint through one of juice cleansing’s most dangerous territories: the movie theater. We’re certain that if you can keep up a cleanse through that piped-in butter smell, you can keep it up anywhere!

Enjoy Ali and Angela’s notes and let them inspire you during your next cleanse. Find a friend to buddy up with to make all that juice guzzling a little more fun – the beginning or end of summer is the perfect time…

Detox Diaries: Two Refinery29 Editors On A Pressed Juicery Cleanse

Day 1

9:00 a.m.
Angela: Heading to Noe to pick up my juices! Pretty excited to detox, especially after just getting back from Mexico and living off tacos and beer for the past week…. #letsdothis

1:18 p.m.
Ali: I just drank 2 and 3 back to back. #whoops
Angela: So did I!!! How funny!

1:45 p.m.
Angela: Citrus 2 is the bomb.
Ali: Can’t have!! Pineapple allergy!!
Angela: Oh dang, that’s right.

Day 2

3:00 p.m.
Angela: Feeling super energized this roots 3 drink is AMAZING. Might be my fave!

6:00 p.m.
Angela: Saw a smashed burrito on the street – is it sad that it made me hungry? Feeling tested for sure.

7:30 p.m.
Angela: About to fail this cleanse… Popcorn at a movie is my weakness.
Ali: Oh my god! I could NOT handle a movie theater right now. The smell alone would make my behavior uncontrollable.

9:30 p.m.
Ali: Did you survive?
Angela: Yep. Not even a kernel. Wasn’t easy.
Ali: You inspire me.

Day 3

10:31 a.m.
Ali: I miss chewing.
Angela: Me too. But it has gotten easier.
Ali: I know! It’s weirdly been easy today. Thought I was going to die yesterday, but now I feel like I could go for another week.

6:00 p.m.
Angela: Definitely feeling more energized today! Didn’t even miss food – I could totally do another day…maybe.

  1. Props to you girls for trying it. The cost is always one of the biggest drawbacks for me.
Don’t some people say that you’re supposed to “chew” your juices? Always makes me laugh to think about, but I wonder if that would help the solid food cravings.

    • Hi Allyn, “chewing” your juice is great to activate digestive enzymes. But it might help cravings as well – give it a shot and let us know!
