bone broth benefits

If you don’t do the bone broth thing yet, it’s due time to start. We’ve been talking about this ancient superfood and it’s unexpected rise to popularity since 2014 and this dreamy healthy food just won’t stop.

Popular with the type that normally slams greens, there are plenty of reasons to start making this intense broth at home or ordering it upfrozen from the pros. We’re sharing seven serious bone broth benefits here along with plenty of recipes to support your new healthy obsession (all recipes, including waffles, archived here).

Nutrients Galore. The unique spectrum of nutrients in bone broth are proven to heal our bodies, rejuvenate our systems and boost our overall health in amazing ways, including: improve sleep quality, lessen fatigue, stimulate cartilage production and inhibit cartilage degradation. The slow-simmering cooking process releases vital minerals from the bones that our bodies are easily able to absorb, meaning maximum benefits!

Glowy Skin. Bone broth is full of collagen, gelatin and hyaluronic acid, all of which contribute to skin elasticity and help plump out creases and fine lines. Healthy fats found in bone broth are also proven to bring brightness to dull skin.

Happy Joints. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are compounds that are often sold on their own as joint health supplements. Anti-inflammatory amino acids help reduce a key issue that causes joint pain. The collagen found in bone broth also helps strengthen the cartilage between our joints and the muscles and connective tissue that supports them.

Amped Up Immunity. Remember all those times mom made soup when you were sick? It’s because this stuff really heals. Bone broth is essentially made up of the same stuff we are, meaning drinking bone broth is like giving our bodies a superboost of what it might be lacking when our immunity is low.

Gut Health Hero. Ever heard of leaky gut? It’s not fun, and can cause a range of issues including as allergies, inflammation and even chronic stress. Bone broth has an amazing ability to replenish the lining of our gut, heal this issue and its symptoms. Learn all about it here.

Delicious Versatility. Bone broth can be eaten on its own but can also be mixed into unexpected places. We love these bone broth waffles from Sharon Brown’s Healing Bone Broth Recipes, full of other fun ways to get in on bone broth benefits.

It’s Easy To Ace. Toss a bunch of ingredients into a slow cooker and voila! Bone broth for the week. This easy recipe is a perfect place to start. Once you get your bearings, check out these simple tips for making that good bone broth amazing. If you’re lazy or just short on time, there are plenty of restaurants popping up across the country that specialize in this ancient superfood. Grab a cup to go here, here, or here – we won’t tell.

  1. The best bone broth will probably come from grass-fed / grass-finished cows. The source of the bones matters. I order mine from Kettle and Fire because it has a lower sodium content than some others. I punch it up with some turmeric and sliced mushrooms. Yum….Honestly, I believe in all 7 benefits in this post.

  2. I make my own broth. I save bones (organic chicken primarily), vegetable parts (stems of cilantro, asparagus, spinach, ends of celery & carrots, stems of mushrooms, etc.) and cook over low heat for 24 – 48 hours. I will can (pressure canning) or freeze broth that I am not ready to use. I tell you it is better broth than what you buy in the store that has been filtered. Every batch has a slightly different flavor primarily based on the vegetable parts I used. Unbelievable flavor & I know ALL of the ingredients in the broth! Really, it is simple & takes very little time!

  3. I can say that there really are benefits to bone broth. I started drinking Au Bon Broth’s bone broth 2 months ago and my health improved. I felt more energetic and friends have been complimenting me that I look less tired and I have “glowing” skin.

  4. Very informative post! I promote the use of regular bone broth to most if not all of my clients. With the uprise of disease and knowing much of it centers around digestive/gut health issues; drinking bone broth is a no brainer. One the most high quality broths I have found (broth-rx.com) utilizes truly pasture raised chickens. Knowing I can avoid undesirable antibiotics and hormones is a must for me. Check it out!

  5. Great post. Bone broth contains multiple amino acids, including arginine, proline and glutamine, that strengthen the lining of your intestines.
