Josie Maran on Bringing Balance To Cravings

¡Hola, Chalkboarders!

Now that I’m almost eight months pregnant, my appetite’s growing almost as fast as my belly. And am I ever having some crazy cravings! If it was just up to me, I’d be eating pizza three times a day.

As much fun as it is to indulge my cravings (and what better excuse is there than being pregnant?), motherhood means doing what’s best for baby—and babies can’t grow on pizza alone. So I’ve been reining myself in, making sure I eat foods that are tasty and healthy for my little belly-bean.

For starters, I’ve been adding at least one pregnancy “superfood” to my plate at every meal. Luckily, I love kale and spinach almost as much as I love pizza, and they’re both loaded with nutrients and vitamins—calcium, beta carotene, Vitamin K, Vitamin C and Folate, a B vitamin that reduces the chance of birth defects.

I’m also nuts about nuts – they’re full of protein and healthy fats. A handful of almonds or cashews is a super-satisfying way to feed those between-meal hunger pangs.

I’m not usually a huge fan of sweet treats, but—thank you, baby number two!—suddenly I’m obsessed with ice cream. To keep from eating tubs of it, I’ve been whipping up banana-almond smoothies instead. I use lots of milk and a little bit of honey, so the smoothie’s almost as sweet and creamy as a milkshake, but healthier. I’m sharing my recipe with you in case you’d like to give it a whirl – no pregnancy required. Enjoy!

My baby’s due in July, but I have a feeling that he or she is going to want out by the end of June. (My husband Ali and I love surprises, so we opted not to find out the gender in advance.) In the meantime, I’ll be balancing out the pizza and ice cream with foods that keep me and my baby-to-be healthy and happy.

With super love and superfood,
Josie

Josie’s Banana-Almond Smoothie

  • 2 large, ripe bananas, peeled
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1 handful raw almonds
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Put everything in the blender and hit “Frappe” or “Blend”. If the smoothie’s too thick for your taste, add quarter-cups of milk ’til it’s just right. Enjoy!
