We’re pretty delicate on the topic of weight loss. Yes, we all want to be vitally healthy, but vital health doesn’t always match the standards of beauty that are currently in fashion. That said, as we look forward to warm summer weather and as many beach days as possible, there’s no need to deal with the symptoms of bloating.

Registered dietitian and founder of Real Nutrition, Amy Shapiro is sharing a handful of great ideas to help us debloat fast. These gut-friendly teas, smoothies and other bevs that we’re getting ready to guzzle as the weather warms. Let these bloat-reducing tonics help you hydrate throughout the day! Keep a jar of spicy ginger tea on your desk at work, sip on spa water in the morning and add a little papaya to that regular smoothie…

Ginger tea |Ginger helps debloat by by stimulating saliva, bile and gastric juices, which aids in digestion. It can help decrease intestinal gas and reduce inflammation in the colon. If you are not a fan of ginger in your food or on its own, you can always ingest it in tea form, either homemade or store bought. Steep fresh ginger in hot water with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.

Fennel tea| Similar to ginger, fennel has properties that cause gas to dissipate within the GI tract. Make fennel tea, a fennel salad or add fennel seeds to soups, salads, spreads or use them when you’re baking.

Curcumin tea |Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric. One study found that curcumin has anti-inflammatory effects on the gut in patients with IBS and can potentially help the brain-gut axis. Turmeric tea is another option for helping these problems. You can even make ginger and turmeric tea for a double whammy!

Banana Smoothie |High potassium levels helps prevent water retention by regulating sodium levels in the body, reducing salt-induced bloating. The soluble fiber can also aid in preventing constipation. Other foods that are high in potassium include avocados, kiwis and oranges. Throw them in your smoothie!

Papaya Smoothie |Papayas can reduce symptoms because of the enzyme, papain, which helps break down proteins. Papayas are great on their own or in smoothies (you can even add them to smoothies with other foods/spices on this list that help reduce bloating).

Cucumber Water |This veggie has been shown to stop the activity of pro-inflammatory enzymes. Try adding it to your water or eat cucumber slices on their own!

Peppermint tea |The menthol in peppermint tea is the active agent that aids in digestion and in alleviating gas and other IBS symptoms. Put this on ice and drink it all summer long! Teapigs Licorice Mint tea is also incredible for this.

Lemon water with apple cider vinegar |The acidity of the lemon and the hydrochloric acid content of the ACV all work together to reduce the uncomfortable feeling. Add ginger for double the power.

Coconut water |Coconut water contains potassium, similar to bananas; electrolytes, which maintain regular fluid levels in the body; and tannins – all help alleviate symptoms of bloating.

  1. I don’t LOVE tea, but I put cucumbers in my smoothie today 🙂

  2. Menthol, not methanol! You definitely don’t want to be drinking methanol…
