Naturopathic Summer Sun Tips with Dr. Holly

As the summer sun begins to woo us all to the beach, we begin to consider all the age-old questions about caring for our skin and general health while out in the heat.  We’ve asked one of our resident experts on natural health, Dr. Holly Lucille to fill us in with tips for beating the heat while staying well.

Q: I plan on wearing sunscreen on vacation, but just in case, what are the most effective natural sunburn remedies?

A: “My two favorites are aloe and baking soda. Due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, aloe vera has a long history of providing sunburn relief. I like it best straight from the plant, but you can also get it in a preparation over the counter. Baking soda has antiseptic properties and creates an alkalized environment that is soothing to the skin. Just rub it on the affected areas at night. It can also help with the itch and work as an exfoliant.”

Q: Sometimes I find myself so exhausted from being in the sun. What is the best way to re-hydrate from a fun but active day at the beach?

A: “Water, water and organic juices! It is very important, especially if you are active and/or consuming alcohol or caffeine (both dehydrating), to get hydrated and re-hydrate often. Drink 16 ounces of water or juice 2 hours before an active day and then drink at least 16 ounces every two hours. After the day is done, make sure to replace any fluids lost during extreme activity, usually two cups for every pound of body weight lost. (I am talking to you, beach volleyball players!)
