Gabriela Artigas is a master at achieving the perfect mix of ease and elegance. Her West Hollywood home is a mix of function and style—her bustling office is tucked into the back while the front holds a closet full of tomboy-ish staples like skinny jeans, wedge sneakers and military jackets. And though her studio is the headquarters of Gabriela Artigas jewelry—a line that she designs and co-owns with her look-a-like Teresita—there are plenty of treasures to be found in her kitchen and outdoor patio where the majority of the cooking, eating and entertaining takes place. While Gabriela whipped up some delicious lavender Prosecco cocktails (which showcase their awesome chemistry-turned-serving set) and taught us about the merits of using whole pieces of charcoal to purify water, Tere plated her gorgeous gingered carrots and roasted squash on top of a fresh mache and dried fruit salad for the perfect al fresco meal. It’s easy to see why these two make such a good team—whether they’re crafting the most gorgeous sculptural jewelry or reminding each other to drizzle just the right amount of aged balsamic on those heavenly roasted figs, they truly bring out the very best in each other.

  4. I love homemade jams! It’s definitely better than store bought. You can be creative with favorite ingredients and your home smells great when it’s cooking….. And the packaging is adorable!

  5. I like to give gifts that reflect my creativity and reflect the recipients’ interests. Last year, I made my brother a pair of chopsticks from juniper root that were really beautiful and unique.

  6. Homemade gifts are the best! I love to can super seasonal fruits and make jam or chutney. This year it was fig, last year persimmon. It’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon, is inexpensive and friends are always so appreciative and touched by the time and effort involved.

  11. Homemade gifts are such a thoughtful touch and can be personalized for family and friends:) I love making different kinds of delicious granolas and creating signature mixes of organic fruits, unexpected flavors, spices for special people on my list. Sweet or slightly savory, the granolas can be packaged in fun ways and make a delicious snack friends can enjoy durning the season.

  13. I love to give things the recipient will use frequently, but not likely buy for herself (I have all sisters). This year I’m working on making one sister leather coasters (new homeowner) and the other an apron (avid baker), while Mom gets a gardening bag for her tools/seeds!

  14. I really like it when people take the time to write out a holiday card for me. I may not still have a gift two years down the line, but I always save a card.

  15. i love to make granola and pack it up in cute, festive packages – cookies too!

  16. I love to make & give heart shaped raw chocolates with Himalayan sea salt, peppermint cacao lip balm & peppermint vanilla sea salt/sugar body scrub. Super luxe holiday trio! 😉

  17. My sister-in-law gives out the most insanely good pepper jelly during the holidays. I consider myself to be good at sharing, but NOT when it comes to Julie’s homemade jelly : ) It is the one time I rejoice that my kids are picky eaters. The fact that there is only one jar, once a year, makes it something to be treasured.

  18. The night before Christmas our family, and whatever friends are crazy enough to join us, go caroling through the neighborhood. Sometimes we have to sing loudly to lure people outside but when we do, we get reactions of pure surprise and enjoyment, and even some dancing and wine to share around. The gift of human connection is wonderful, powerful and best of all FREE!

  20. My favorite gift to give is homemade marmalade- one year, we made different batches made with bitter orange, lemon, and pink grapefruit. The fruit looks so pretty in the glass jars, like little jewels. I love thinking of friends enjoying the marmalade a million different ways: on toast, in oatmeal, or on pancakes. We will be making lots this holiday season!

  22. We love to make and jar homemade simmer sauces — peanut ginger, barbecue, or chutney. You’re not only giving a gift made with love, you’re giving the priceless gift of a quick weeknight dinner!

  23. Peppermint Bark! I’m a big baker and always give those closest to me cookies, fudge, or candy at the holidays. That said, I realized a few years back that narrowing in on what someone else really woud like, instead of what I would like to bake, is the best bet. Perfect example is peppermint bark. My mother-in-law loves the stuff. And I finally got it: making her what she really loves is a much better gift than making the cookies I WANT to make.:)

  24. Every year i make a homemade gift basket of healthy treats. I am a yoga teacher and am always trying to get my family to eat healthier so i make a bunch of their favorites more nutritious…the big hit is always the peanut butter cups. This year I am adding a homemade idea notebook…because i feel 2013 is going to be filled with them!

  27. A couple of months ago, juice transformed my life. And then it snowballed, and I became vegan. I try not to proselytize, but I feel really, really GOOD. This Christmas–since I lost my job, I’m going to make some beautiful juice with greens + add beets for gorgeous color, pour it into Mason jars, and tie with ribbon. I also make nut milk with organic almonds from the Massa farm, and I might whirl up a batch or two with some “noggy” spices. What better gift than health? Cheers!

  29. I like to create a thoughtful gift basket that appeals to all 5 senses – sight (photo in frame), smell (clove-studded lemons), sound (homemade music CD), taste (cookies!), touch (soft, fuzzy gloves). How can you not love it? Happy Holidays!

  30. I also make jewelry and love to make one-of-a-kind pieces for my friends and family. During the year, I find little nuggets of fun that remind me of them. As the holidays approach, I design the pieces. It is so much more fulfilling for all involved (and the environment). I have been known to take old nuts and bolts and made them into earrings and necklaces. Repurpose for a one-of-a-kind gift that will be appreciated for years to come. (and out of a landfill). 🙂
